Turn trash into treasure! A fun and bright workshop to create your own mini shrine.
Using old boxes and food packaging, tutor Bean-Mhi will show you how to create a beautiful and joyful shrine to whatever you want, whether it’s someone, something, nature, a beloved pet or even yourself!
By the end of the three-hour workshop you’ll leave with a shiny and brightly painted shrine. Drawing inspiration from Mexico and it’s wonderful altars or ‘ofrendas’, we’ll look at imagery and designs to inspire you to make something that represents what you want to make, a totally unique and wonderful celebration.
We will look at example of work made before and some books for inspiration, talking about where we might see shrines in the world and what they mean to us. Using old food packaging boxes, tape and cardboard we will create the base of our shrine that we’ll then painted and adorn in treasure including recycled sequins, beads, ribbons, broken jewellery and more.
There is no experience necessary for this workshop just bring yourselves as you are! All materials will be provided and if you have photos you would like to include please bring them along.
Bean-Mhi is a self-taught illustrator, textiles artist and natural dyer who currently works as a freelance Youth Arts worker and facilitates community arts and textiles workshops for all ages with an emphasis on holding space for conversations around mental well-being and leaning into the beauty in everyday living. Her practice has grown from her love for the natural world and its wonder, continually exploring sustainable art practices and how to tap into the existing knowledge and joy that communities hold. It is her aim to start conversations within these spaces about how we can best protect our planet whilst also finding a sense of connection to ourselves and others. Nature connection has become integral to her practice with work that centres around exploring creativity, authenticity and playfulness.
This informal 3-hour workshop will begin at 10:30am and end at 1:30pm.
Participants must be 14+. Under 18s must be accompanied by a paying adult at all times.
