Leicestershire has three world-renowned universities, each within walking distance of green open spaces and bustling shops and bars.
The University of Leicester is a top 30 UK university which is famed for its role in discovering the remains of King Richard III, and for the discovery of genetic fingerprinting by Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys. As the brains behind Leicester's Space Park and a founding partner of the National Space Centre it is also behind the city's great reputation for space science and space-related industries. Leicester is a key partner in the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust alongside De Montfort University, and its world leading clinical medicine research was ranked 2nd in the UK.
A stone’s throw away from the lush open spaces and tree-lined paths of Victoria Park, and the vibrant shops, bars and restaurants of Queens Road, the campus is also a hotspot for live entertainment at Leicester’s O2 Academy.
A gentle mile stroll down the leafy Edwardian promenade of New Walk brings visitors towards De Montfort University. DMU is a hub for the creative industries, with a well-founded reputation for creativity alongside practical courses in the health sciences, business and fashion. The uni has close links with industry, meaning 97% of graduates are in work. It also is a partner in the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.
Nestled among medieval buildings including the Magazine Gateway, Leicester Castle and the tranquil riverside Castle Gardens, the university also boasts stunning modern architecture and a multi-million pound sports centre.
North of the city, in one of our most historic market towns is Loughborough Univeristy. Consistently ranked as one of the best universities in the country, Loughborough is also home to the best sports-related courses in the world (QS World University Rankings 2023). And if Loughborough University was a country its athletes would have finished sixth in the overall 2022 Commonwealth Games medal table – ahead of South Africa, Jamaica, and Nigeria.
Right in the heart of the busting town, Loughborough's 523 acre campus has plenty of open spaces and gardens, including edible fruit trails and fantastic sport facilities. The bustling town centre is home to an 800 year old market, historical attractions and is right in the heart of the ancient landscapes of Charnwood Forest.
