To celebrate its bicentenary this year, the national gallery has sent ten of its treasures to selected regional museums. This course offers an in-depth ‘tour’ of these selected works, from the exquisite medieval Wilton Diptych to national icons such as Constable’s Haywain and Turner’s fighting Temeraire and landmarks in global art history such as Botticelli’s mars and venus and Monet’s water lily pond. Through in depth looking and discussion, we will explore the significance of these works and the idea of a national collection.
This is a seminar-style course which combines information sharing, group discussion and debate and the close study of individual works and related historical sources and academic writings.
