About

Computala Exhibition Launch, Symposium & Film Screening

To celebrate the opening of COMPUTALA alongside the usual free booze and private view, we are hosting a short symposium with previous Lincoln Collection curator and Net Art researcher, Jenny Gleadell, before a screening of iconic 90's film Hackers on VHS.

Beginning with an exclusive first view of our new exhibition, we follow with a critical discussion exploring the internet's complex role in contemporary artistic expression. The evening concludes in a curated Gallery Screening of Hackers (on VHS!).

This opening event invites dialogue between practitioners, researchers, and audiences interested in the intersection of digital technology and creative practice.

Join us at LCB Depot for an evening of artistic discourse and digital exploration.

"Is the Internet Truly Inclusive? Creative Practice and Accessibility in the Digital Age" Symposium

Join us on 10th January, 4-6pm, as we explore both the possibilities and ongoing challenges of creating inclusive digital spaces. The discussion will be followed by a special screening of the 1996 classic Hackers.

Explore the vital questions of digital accessibility at COMPUTALA's opening event at LCB Depot. This critical discussion challenges the assumption that the internet automatically creates connection and access, examining instead how creative practices can build genuinely inclusive digital spaces.

Through talks and discussion, leading artists and curators will share their approaches to embedding accessibility in digital creative work. Convened by PhD researcher and curator Jenny Gleadell, this event opens up important conversations about how we can collectively work toward a more accessible internet for creative practice.

New Media Art Club Gallery Screenings Presents:

Hackers - selected by artist/creative producer Anoushka Goodwin.

Their only crime was curiosity.

Released at a time when the domestic internet was still in its infancy, Hackers offered a vibrant and thrilling glimpse into the possibilities of this new frontier of a digital wild west where the rules had yet to be written.

Once a tool for uniting people across vast distances, the internet is now a space dominated by relentless branding, algorithms, and the ceaseless churn of "Content." We lost the potential; maybe that's just nostalgia?

Let's revisit Iain Softley's Hackers, brought to life with Raphael Moreu's script, and celebrate a time when the internet was less a corporate machine and more of a canvas for the imagination.

GRAYS Coffee Shop + Kitchen will be open for refreshments.

Doors from 4PM for private viewing of exhibition and symposium, film at 6:30PM.

Pay as you feel for the film screening.

This event is made possible with support from Arts Council England's Project Grants and BFI's Pitch Pots.
