Welcome to the second part of our year in review where we look at everything that happened in the summer and autumn around Leicester and Leicestershire. Some incredible festivals, massive gigs, food, Pride and sport for you to enjoy in this one!
July
It was definitely the summer of sport as we celebrated England reaching the final of the Euros and then success in the Olympics. We put together a great blog showcasing the fantastic opportunities to try a new sport here in Leicestershire.
Lestah! It was the big one as Kasabian came to Viccy Park for their Summer Solstice gig and blew us all away with their awesome tunes and electric performance!
We welcomed back the Cosby Yarn Bomb! This home-grown (or hand-stitched) event is one of the most popular on the calendar and always one of our highlights. But soak it up as they’re having a very well deserved year off in 2025, but will be back bigger and better in ‘26!
We took a ride on the Great Central Railway to celebrate their summer offers. Their Harry-Potter-esque steam trains and locomotives even caught the attention of Visit England, who showcased our video to their 491,000 followers.
August
The Maize Maze that takes up an entire field! Wistow Maze brought a touch of patriotism to their annual event, with a design inspired by Heptathlete Katrina Johnson Thompson, and many hours of fun getting lost in the Leicestershire countryside!
Brand new this year and co-organised by the great people at About Leicester (plus our Taste The Place campaign), Leicester Food Festival made its debut in Abbey Park as thousands of people came to experience this celebration of food and drink.
August was chock full of fantastic events, and the Indian food, dance and performance festival Leicester Mela was another which took over Abbey Park, with thousands of people enjoying the atmosphere there.
At the end of the summer Leicester went Rainbow coloured as the city celebrated the annual Pride parade and party in Abbey Park!
And the month concluded with the first ever Oadby Food Festival, again inspired by our Taste the Place campaign. Thousands of people packed out the parade with local food providers filling all our bellies!
September
The Brewbeat craft beer festival came back to Jubilee Square and provided impeccable summer vibes, great music and fantastic food and drink!
In September Leicester was been named the best city to live and work in the East Midlands in the new 'Good Growth for Cities' Index. We were ranked 20th in the UK out of the 52 cities featured in the study.
Following the fantastic accolade of being named England’s Curry Capital, The Leicestershire Curry Awards, help at the beautiful art deco Athena in the city centre celebrated the very best Indian food from across our county.
The rain…. Oh goodness it seemed like the rain would never stop!
October
Everards Brewery celebrated 175 years of trading in October, it was 1849 that they set up their brewery on Leicester’s Southgate Street, and we showcased their fantastic beer and brewery tours with this post.
To celebrate the release of Paddington in Peru the world-famous bear came to town, as Ashby de la Zouch became one of 23 locations across the UK to host a statue of the marmalade-loving bear. This is a permanent fixture now, so head to Ashby to meet him!
Keeping on the film theme, we celebrated Leicestershire’s connection to film and TV. Whether it was The Crown, Da Vinci Code or The Lost King, stars like the Attenboroughs and Richard Armitage, or memorabilia like Matt Damon's spacesuit or James Bond's bike!
Restaurant Week was once again a roaring success with this BID Leicester-supported week of food seeing restaurants, cafes and pubs across the city absolutely packed out
As the local community prepared for Leicester’s fantastic Diwali celebrations, we toured the Golden Mile to see what they were up to!
November
The month kicked off with the biggest of bangs as the Abbey Park Bonfire and Fireworks Display lit up our skies.
A brand new Cultural and Creative strategy for Leicester was launched at Phoenix and highlighted the key role that this vital sector plays in the city. Whether it’s music, creative arts, film production or exhibitions, the Cultural Quarter is always buzzing.
Leicester finally has a Christmas Market! For the first time in years, the streets were lined with cabins selling fantastic food and great gifts to celebrate the season!
As always the Christmas Lights Switch On was a party like no other!
December
We popped along to the new and improved Belvoir Castle Retail Village to find out how they were celebrating Christmas.
Despite some rather shocking weather (the story of the autumn) the Clarendon Park Christmas Fair was absolutely packed with thousands of people looking for gifts, food and entertainment.
The Ice Skate Leicester Real Ice Rink returned for 2024 and the launch night was bigger and better than ever, as is the rink itself!
And finally, we’ll leave you with our Visit Leicester 2024 Wrapped post. Swipe across to see some of our key stats from our best year ever! (oh and we’ve recently leapfrogged TripAdvisor to take that number 1 spot for What’s On in Leicester too!)
