Just last week, BID Leicester held the ‘Best Bar None’ awards, naming seven city centre venues as the best in Leicester for putting customer safety first.
Best Bar None is a nationally recognised scheme which is aimed at keeping Leicester’s nightlife safe and welcoming, with accredited venues having to pass strict safety assessments, complete staff training and build trust in the community. The awards are backed by police and council licensing teams and run by BID Leicester.
This year two city venues celebrated back-to-back wins. The Rutland and Derby on Millstone Lane and Cosy Club on Highcross Street both retained their titles from last year.
New entrants included 2Funky Complex on Braunstone Gate, which was named the best live entertainment venue, and Mosh alternative nightclub took home the award for best late-night venue. The Marquis Wellington on London Road was awarded best newcomer, with Lane7 being named best leisure venue. And finally the fantastic South American eatery Sonrisa was recognised as the best restaurant.
The scheme grows every year, with a total of 50 pubs, bars and clubs across Leicester have receiving Best Bar None accreditation.
Restaurants named in the list include the fantastic 1573 Bar and Grill, Caribbean party venue Turtle Bay and the Mexican cantina in St Martin’s Square Bodega. Newly reopened as an Italian restaurant, Prana on Town Hall Square was honoured. The award-winning Indian vegetarian eatery Herb and its slightly meatier sister restaurant Kayal also gained nods as did Old Town steakhouse Middletons. Both of the Merchant of Venice Italian restaurants on Loseby Lane and Granby Street were accredited as was The Knight and Garter on Green Dragon Square.
The city centre pubs which were accredited for their safety and welcome were city institution Firebug on Millstone Lane. Traditional boozers The High Cross, Queen of Bradgate, The Corn Exchange, Hogarths, O'Neill's and the oldest pub in the city The Globe were named winners. In the Cultural Quarter The Real Ale Classroom and The Exchange Bar were honoured while cocktail and wine bars The Gadabout, Audrey, Revolution, Veeno and Watsons Cocktail Bar were also named. Rounding out the list were The Metal Monocle on Braunstone Gate, The Basement and craft ale bar Tonne in St Martin’s Square.
But it’s not just about the pubs, late night venues, hotels and casinos were also accredited. Party venue Bistro Live, the Phoenix Cinema, Curve Theatre, The Big Difference comedy club and the Y Theatre were on the list, as were sports venues like Caddyshackers, East Street Lanes, Rileys Pool and Snooker Hall and Roxy Ballroom.
Rounding out the list were hotels The Holiday Inn, The Gresham and City Rooms, plus adult entertainment venues Genting Casino, Grosvenor Casino and Platinum Lace.
