A well as Leicester’s annual Christmas Lights Switch On, there will be plenty of fun happening around the county as our districts and market towns celebrate the festive season with Christmas Markets, events and of course, lights switch ons! Here’s our run down of some of the best stuff happening around Leicestershire.
Oadby & Wigston
Head to Oadby Parade on the 16 November as they get the Christmas party started with the Oadby lights switch on! This is the earliest light switch on across the county and they will have a Festive Market along the parade, with Santa’s Grotto, Arts, Crafts, Food and loads more. Wigston town centre lights switch on follows on the 30 November, as you will be able to enjoy loads of Christmas Stalls, Santa, a Fun Fair, Festive Entertainment and food and drink!
Blaby District
Around Blaby there’s lots happening, the Braunstone Town Council Christmas Craft Fair is taking place on 16 November at the Braunstone Civic Centre. Running from 11am to 3pm, come along and make a start on your festive shopping with a fantastic collection of stalls featuring some fantastic local creatives.
Over in the north of Blaby, the Glenfield Christmas Lights Switch-on is taking place at 6.30pm on the 29 November at Park House. Come and see the lights go on and get your refreshments in the Memorial Hall Musical, join in with a Village Christmas sing-a-long, and explore Santa's Ice Village Grotto.
The Enderby Christmas Lights switch on is on Friday 6 December from 4.30pm. There will be a funfair for the kids, Christmas market stalls on King Street Car Park and at the Civic Centre, performances by The Enderby Band and The Musical Village Choir plus a free Santa’s grotto! The Christmas Tree will be switched on at 6pm and the event finishes at 7pm.
Always a highlight of the season is the Archers Festive Tractor Run, where around 300 tractors festooned with Christmas lights and decorations make their way around the roads and villages of south Leicestershire. Taking place on the 22 December this year will be brighter, and more creative than ever before. Further details and route announcements will come closer to the date. Hinckley & Bosworth
The Tin Hat Fair in Hinckley always marks the start of the festive season in West Leicestershire and this year it takes place on Friday 22 November, when the festivities start at 4pm and the lights go on at 6.30pm! The Tin Hat Fair continues through Saturday 23 November in Castle Street and Market Place. On the 4 December local residents are invited to view the Christmas Lights by car on the Christmas Lights Car Trail, running from 6-8pm along Castle Street.
Join in with the traditional spirit of Christmas at 4.15pm on the 13 December as you join in with signing well known Carols around the tree in Market Place. Run in partnership with Churches Together. On Sunday 15 December the Festive Feast & Crafts Market comes to Hinckley’s Market Place from 10am to 4pm. There will be a range of street food stalls, warm mulled wine and crafts stalls. Enjoy live Christmas music and entertainment by the Christmas tree.
Finally get set for a very special Christmas surprise in the Town Centre running from 21-23 December. This festive treat runs over the three days and is hosted by Hinckley BID. Keep your eyes out for more information soon!
Melton
Melton Mowbray, with its mix of history and fantastic food is the perfect pace to get into the spirit of Christmas. The Christmas Light Switch On will take place on Market Place on Friday 6 December with live entertainment from 5pm amazing LED stilt walkers and performances from the Rock Choir. The Christmas tree and lights throughout the town will be turned on at 6.45pm followed by live music from Melton Band and Sky Theatre’s SIX the Musical until 7.40pm
Running all that weekend from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 December is the big Melton Christmas Market. The traditional Christmas Market will offer loads of festive gifts, local produce, food & drink & hand-crafted wares, Santa’s Grotto, Live Music, entertainment and much more! It will be open from 10am to 4pm daily.
Now in its 22nd year, don’t miss the magical Christmas Tree Festival in St Mary's Church on Burton Street. Running from the 6-10 December the festival showcases the amazing creativity of schools, businesses, organisations, individuals and visitors from all over the country. Entrance Fee is just £2.50. And in St John’s Church on 7 and 8 December a beautiful array of wreaths will be on display in their annual Christmas Wreath Festival. Free entry with refreshments and guided tours of the Church also available, along with plenty of Christmas Cheer.
North West Leicestershire
The Christmas lights switch on in Ashby de la Zouch is on Saturday 30 November with a Christmas market featuring more than 70 stalls, a Michael Bublé tribute, performances throughout the day and snow cannon finale! All acts can be seen on the stage in Market Street. The day runs from 10am to 5pm. And the fun continues on Sunday with more live music on the main stage, fairground rides, festive food and drink and a chance to meet Santa himself.
Loughborough
Loughborough's Christmas lights will be switched-on in front of thousands of people on Friday 29 November. The event, organised by Charnwood Borough Council, will be a fantastic evening of fun with market stalls, food and drink, live entertainment and fairground rides. The Christmas lights will be switched-on at approximately 6.30pm by the winner of this year's Light up Loughborough competition.
On Saturday 1 December the annual Santa Fun Run in aid of Rainbows Hospice will start in the Market Place at 9am. This fantastic event sees thousands of people dress in their best Father Christmas costume to make room for some mince pies with either a 5km or 2.5km run, walk, skip or hop! All funds raised go to this very best of causes. Then at 2pm in the market place, the big screen will be showing two Christmas films, which have been chosen based on the results of a poll on the Council’s Facebook page. There will be stalls serving food and hot drinks for anyone feeling the cold.
