While Christmas is definitely on the way, we are going to focus on some of the other main events this coming month, from great live music to theatre shows that will have you laughing and jumping in the aisles. And of course, it’s Leicester, so the best comedians are coming to town!

What’s happening on stage

There’s loads happening on stage this month. SUPERYOU is an epic new music that really went viral, with thousands of fans posting covers of its music over the last four years. It’s at the Curve until the 9 November following sold-out concerts at New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Lyric Theatre, London.

A musical sensation, Shaun Williamson, or Barry from Eastenders, has taken the music festival scene by storm with his musical renditions, and now he brings Barrioke to the O2 Academy on 1 November. The classic music Chitty Chitty Bang Bang comes to the Curve from 5-9 November with unforgettable songs including Truly Scrumptious and the Academy Award-nominated Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Lighthearted, warm and funny, Sheila’s Island is on at The Little Theatre from 11-16 November. From the author of Calendar Girls and Kinky Boots, it tells the story of four middle-management businesswomen who become the first people ever to get shipwrecked on an island in the Lake District.


Leicester – the home of live comedy

It’s not long til the release of details for next year’s Leicester Comedy Festival but the comedy shows keep going year round. Maisie Adam has appeared on Live at the Apollo, Mock the Week and The Last Leg and brings witty observations, high octane energy and right good jokes to the Y Theatre on 3 November.

Also familiar from her TV appearances and fresh from a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Jo Caulfield is bringing her new tour show, Here Comes Trouble Firebug on 10 November. Jack Dee needs no introduction after more than 30 years of comedy fame and he will be coming to Loughborough Town Hall on 12 November to guide you through his varied life and career with his customary charm and well known gift for talking absolute rubbish on any given subject.

Mock the Week regular Andy Parsons is going to be at the Y Theatre on 15 November. After a completely sold out and critically acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Festival, he is back with his brand new tour, Bafflingly Optimistic.

Starting his career as the new voice of ITV’s Blind Date, before reaching record high listening figures for his infamous Asian Network Breakfast show and then getting snapped up by The One Show, Tommy Sandhu will be bringing his stand up show to the Y Theatre on 17 November

BAFTA nominee and star of Taskmaster Lucy Beaumont is going to let loose and let slip on her roller coaster world at De Montfort Hall on 22 November. Featuring off-beat stories, unusual anecdotes, and bizarre journeys through modern day womanhood.


Live music

Autumn is definitely touring time and there are loads of great artists coming to our city in November. Brianna Corrigan of the Beautiful South returned to the stage after a 10-year hiatus with 2 hugely successful and largely sold-out tours throughout the UK and Ireland already behind her. She’ll be at the International Arts Centre 7 November.

Also on the 7 November two bands who pretty much defined the 80s and 90s dance and electronic music scene. The Orb and Ozric Tentacles will be co-headlining at the Athena in their first high profile concert. Book your tickets here.

Experience classical music by Candlelight at Leicester Cathedral as the London Concertante brings Vivaldi’s masterpiece The Four Seasons to life on 9 November, plus one of the most beautiful pieces for the violin, Vaughan-Williams’ transcendental "The Lark Ascending".

A different type of classic at De Montfort Hall on 11 November as Grammy nominated, multiple Platinum album-selling group The Stylistics bring their charisma, style and harmony from Philadelphia to Leicester. As expected, tickets for Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra at De Montfort Hall are nearly sold out, but you can pick up one of the last few for his concert on 21 November.c

The Stereo MCs formed in the 80s and were one of the hit bands of the early 90s with their mix of electronic music and early HipHop, also running G Street Records, which launched the careers of many UK Hip Hop acts. They’re at O2 Academy on 21 November. Another hit band from the 90s coming to the O2 this month are Shed Seven, one of the top bands of the indie scene, with four top 20 albums and 15 top 40 singles! They’ll be at the Leicester Uni venue on 25 November

Two of the elder statesmen of the rock and pop scene will be at De Montfort Hall in November. Firstly is Ultravox frontman and winner of Grammys and Ivor Novello awards Midge Ure, who will be celebrating his 50 years in the business on 25 November. Then on the 30 November it’s king of the keyboards, prog rock genius and Yes founder Rick Wakeman who brings his Yuletide Christmas Show to the Hall.


Museums and exhibitions

On Sunday 3 November join Mark Collins, one of The Guildhall’s wonderful tour guides for a special and unique look at the history of Leicester's oldest medieval building from when it was home to Leicester's first Police Force.

On the second Saturday of each month, the LCB Depot hosts CQ Earlies – fun, free, and creative sessions for children and families. On the 9 November they are welcoming Nupur Arts to the Mezzanine for a CQ Earlies Diwali special! There will be crafting inspired by the story of Rama and Sita and a chance for the little ones to make their own beautiful things to take away!

Also on the 9 November in the Cultural Quarter come along to Two Queens who are holding an Open Studio, giving you the chance to take a sneaky peek behind the scenes at this arti-run gallery. And next door at Leicester Print Workshop’s Print Fair on 9 & 10 November, you can buy original prints, cards and crafts from their vibrant community of printmakers. Also have a go yourself and print your own bag to take all your purchases home!
