From Christmas events, the Christmas Lights Switch on, ice skating, festive light trails and a Christmas market, it's all happening in Leicester this Christmas! Read on to find out more.
Lights Switch On
The fun starts on Wednesday 20 November as the Lights Switch-On takes over the city centre. Last year saw tens of thousands descend on the city centre. Expect DJ performances, light trail, roaming performers, all building up to the big switch of more than 16,000 lights at the Clock Tower. And speaking of the Clock Tower, that’s where you’ll find Leicester’s iconic 15 metre tall Christmas Tree!
Ice Skate Leicester
One of our favourite traditions at Christmas is ice skating on Leicester's real Ice Rink, and thanks to Ice Skate Leicester it's back and better than ever. With new layout, new lighting, including under-ice LED lights, you will definitely feel the spirit of the season. Back again for 2024 is the 35 metre Wheel of Light in Jubilee Square, right next to the Ice Skate Leicester real ice rink. Try out your skating skills, then refresh yourself at winter village nearby! You can get your skates on from 5 December through to 5 January with tickets from just £7 per person. Look out for some special events, disco nights and much more besides!
A brand new Festive Market
New for 2024 is the Leicester Christmas Market! By popular demand Leicester has delivered its first proper Christmas Market in as long as we can remember. This is your chance to fill your winter boots in Gallowtree Gate from Thursday 14 November through to Sunday 29 December. Whether you’re after a cheeky Bratwurst, a festive snack or all manner of other festive treats or gifts, the Christmas Market is the perfect place to find it!
Festive light trails!
We all love a light trail and the beautiful Enlightened trail will return to transform the stunning Abbey Park from 29 November through to Christmas Eve. Experience a mile-long route packed with curious creatures, unreal illuminations and holographic displays that will stimulate your senses and stir your imagination.
A flurry of Christmas trees and the traditional nativity scene will be installed in Town Hall Square with entertainment throughout the festive period!
And in Leicester Cathedral from 18-23 November, Luxmuralis will transform the iconic and historic building into a light and sound extravaganza telling the story of space and time.
Festive fun while you shop
We’ll also be welcoming back the Billy Bates Funfair to Humberstone Gate from 8 November to the 5 January, the perfect place to entertain the kids whilst Christmas shopping or visiting the city during the festive period. Speaking of shopping, there will be late night shopping every Wednesday across the city centre in the run up to the big day.
Christmas on stage and screen
Leicester’s theatres and cinemas will be full of festive cheer with the classic musical My Fair Lady at the Curve, panto fun with Snow White at De Montfort Hall and Sleeping Beauty at the Little Theatre. And keep your eyes peeled as the Phoenix cinema will use their four screens to show classic and modern Christmas movies at great prices.
