The Equinox has been and gone so we’re officially in autumn, or as some of you may prefer, Spooky Season! Halloween is just around the corner and whether you’ve got kids, or are a big kid, we’ve got some of the best ghostly, ghoulish activities to get involved with in Leicestershire!
Big events
Join Leicestershire County Cricket Club on the 31 October for their Halloween Fireworks Spooktacular! Alongside an amazing fireworks display, there will be exciting fairground rides, safe Trick or Treating, Little Devils Disco and fang-tastic food and drink options
Belvoir Castle have an Enchanted Halloween Trail set within their Adventure Playground. Betty the Witch and her sisters have lost all the ingredients for their special Halloween spell and need help to find them. Follow the Halloween trail, visit their Animal Park and unleash your creativity with Pumpkin Painting.
Starting as a humble pumpkin patch, the Cattows Halloween Farm is now one of the biggest Halloween events in the region. Growing more than 100,000 pumpkins every year, this is a full-blown family festival with loads of kids activities, free on-site parking and on-site restaurant & bar
Twinlakes Park always has some great Halloween fun on offer, and throughout October kids can come in fancy dress, pick their own pumpkin, and join in with loads of great spooky activities at their Family Scream Park event. But after dark it’s strictly adults only as the Twinlakes Xtreme Scream Park makes for a spine-tingling date night! Jaw-dropping and shocking performances from the Street Theatre Group, zombie paintball, rides in the dark and live fire performers are just some of the things that will keep your heart rate up!
Pumpkin Patches
Of course there are loads of smaller pumpkin patches if you’re looking to decorate your place for the season. Not far from Market Bosworth, Kirkby Pumpkin Patch is free to get in and there’s loads of fun on the farm with a Treasure Hunt Maize Maze, coffee hut, sweet station, Disney slide, hook a duck and hot food and drink!
At Windmill Farm Park take a step into their Halloween Spooktacular with your pick from their homegrown pumpkin patch (one medium pumpkin per kid’s ticket). Search for the missing ingredient in their Wicked Woods explore the cobweb maze, get making crooked crafts and scarecrows and take part in the fall festival!
Wymeswold Fruit Farm is a family-run farm and they will be open 7 days a week throughout October. With thousands of pumpkins from tiny munchkins to whopping big ones, plus lots of weird and wonderful ornamental gourds and tasty squash for cooking. You’ll also get a free goody bag when you pay, with everything you need for carving plus a sweet treat!
Spooky fun!
If you’re looking to get interactive there are always opportunities to get involved with paranormal investigations around Halloween. There is a Paranormal Taster Session at Belgrave Hall on 13-14 October which is ideal for beginners keen on learning more about the world of ghost hunting including a Ghost Story Torchlight Tour and a chance to explore the building, reputed to be Leicester’s Most Haunted, with experienced Investigators. You can also do the same at The Guildhall, which is one of Leicester’s oldest buildings, on the 20-21 October.
The Witches and Warlocks craft day at Belgrave Hall on 23 October is a little more family friendly, with the chance to make a witch's cat hat, a flying wizard, and your own book of spells. Kids can come along in fancy dress and join the magical trail around the hall and garden. Also at Belgrave Hall on 26 October, the Spooky Glass Fusion Workshop allows you to make a skull, pumpkin or ghost. Just £12 each with all materials supplied.
It's not Halloween without a good gruesome story. Join archaeologist Matthew Morris at the Guildhall on 29 October for Murder and Mayhem in Medieval Leicester to hear about the bell ringer murdered by the vicar on Christmas Eve, the Franciscan friar hung drawn and quartered for treason, and the criminal deeds of the Bushby brothers.
Explore Leicester’s historic streets for a Halloween Ghost Walk at Newarke Houses Museum on 30 & 31 October. Explore the area and meet some of the characters who helped to make Leicester the city it is today and explore the Castle area with its tales of uncanny creatures lurking in its shadows.
Films and theatre
It wouldn’t be Halloween without a scary movie and there’s loads across the city. The Phoenix is hosting their Season of the Witch, showing some of their favourite witches on screen from Robert Eggers period piece The VVitch, Jack Nicholson in The Witches of Eastwick, the teen horror The Craft, Roman Polanski’s classic Rosemary’s Baby, and everyone’s childhood nightmare The Witches, based on the Roald Dahl tale. They also have a special Frightapalooza all nighter on Saturday 26 October. Expect a chilling night of classic, cult and downright weird horror with 5 terrifying films including Invasion Of The Body Snatchers.
The Guildhall is the perfect setting for a freaky film experience and they have some great ones on show. On 26 October, step into the Bates Motel with Psycho, then open the Cabinet of Dr Caligari. On 27 October, Coraline is the family matinee, then things get darker as the terrifying BBC adaptation of The Woman in Black gets a rare showing, before the day is rounded out with high school shocker Carrie. And to really get your spine chilled, on 28 October, the devil’s child is on the loose in The Omen, before the season concludes with John Landis’s horror comedy An American Werewolf in London.
It’s one of the most classic thrillers of all time, and this production of An Inspector Calls at the Curve is one you don’t want to miss. With its spooky period atmosphere and incredible staging, you can drop in from 29 October-2 November to experience this mystery for yourself.
Halloween party time
Firebug is always the place to get the party started and Halloween is no exception. On Friday 25 October the Glitterbug Burlesque Halloween show will be taking place. They are also hosting Halloween Club Nights on Saturday 26 October and Thursday 31 October with prizes available for the best fancy dress. Then on Sunday 27 October they will be hosting the Get Crafted Spooky Halloween Market with loads of local creatives selling their wares and Halloween themed cocktails!
