We can’t quite believe that the summer is over already… Where did the time go?! But we’re ready to bring you the biggest events and activities of the start of the autumn. We’ve got more exhibitions and festivals, music, enough comedy for another Festival and of course, the start (and end) of sporting seasons!

FESTIVALS AND HERITAGE

Explore the art of the canal at Foxton Locks Museum. All month long ‘Roses and Castles’ looks at the unique and evocative artworks which decorate canal boats and tells their stories.

Starting off the month is the Brewbeat Craft Beer and Music festival. Running from Friday 30 August to Sunday 1 September, Brewbeat returns to Jubilee Square for its fourth year with sunshine (hopefully!), music, and great beers in hand. Entry is free!

The Swithland Flower and Vegetable Show is being held on 7 September at the Griffin Inn in Swithland and will be opened by Great British Bake Off finalist Josh Smalley. Since its first show 46 years ago, the show has raised over £146,000 for local charities including LOROS and Rainbows.

Coming to the county from 6-15 September, Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture. Check out our new blog to find out more about the historic buildings that are opening their doors to reveal the historic secrets within.

A celebration of British craftsmanship, the Artisan Show at Belvoir Castle on 28 and 29 September presents some of the finest craft and artisanal pieces from the region in the beautiful grounds of the Grade 1 listed historic Castle. Head to the Engine Yard for live music and pop-up artisan food stalls.

MUSIC

As the nights start to get longer and colder, it’s definitely time to head inside and enjoy some live music and there’s some great stuff going on in September. On 7 September, at 2Funky Music Café, Belgian Jump Up Maestro DJ Premium makes his Leicester debut at their Paragon into the Abyss event.

Described as one of English music’s best kept secrets by Rolling Stone magazine, Peter Bruntnell comes to the Musician on the 11 September. Also at the Musician on 7 September are one of the top tribute acts to heavy metal legends Metallica. Moretallica use the same equipment and if you close your eyes, you could almost be at one of their stadium shows. Metallica recently paid tribute to Elton John by covering two of his tunes at a special event and you can see top Elton tribute act Rocket Man at the Curve the next night, 12 September!

The Vic Bikers Pub has long been one of the leading music venues in Leicestershire. Get your fishnets and black make-up out as they host The Gothic Gathering on 13 and 14 September featuring Joy Division tribute Transmission, Siouxie Suicide, moons of Jupiter and more! Just a stone’s throw away in Loughborough the Town Hall plays host to Leicester legends Showaddywaddy on 13 September.

Something a little more classy now as Leicester International Music Festival brings the cream of classical musicians to the city. Concerts are being held in Leicester’s historic Hansom Hall on Belvoir Street and in Leicester Cathedral. Click to find out what’s happening.

Up and coming indie pop star Lauran Hibberd will be at the Soundhouse on 20 September as part of her UK tour supporting her new album Girlfriend Material. Then on the 28 September a true legend of UK music comes to Leicester as hero of punk and reggae Don Letts plays a headline DJ set at the International Arts Centre as part of their Northern Soul night.

THEATRE

There’s plenty going on in theatreland too. Made in Dagenham the Musical is an amateur production based on the 2010 film about strikes the Ford factory in Essex and will be at Loughborough Town Hall from 3-7 September. From 9-14 September at the Y Theatre you can see Witness for the Prosecution, generally regarded as one of Agatha Christie's most accomplished plays.

There’s lots happening at the Curve too! Pretty Woman the Musical is playing from 16-21 September, The Mountaintop is a dramatization of Dr Martin Luther King’s last hours and runs from 21 September to 5 October. And the musical phenomenon Hairspray is sure to have them partying in the aisles from 23-28 September

At De Montfort Hall there’s one for the kids as you can join Peppa Pig’s Fun Day Out on 15 September. Packed full of songs, dance and muddy puddles, there are guaranteed giggles and snorts for all Peppa fans.

There are still some tickets left for An Audience With Aled Jones at Loughborough Town Hall on 28 September. Come and hear him tell the story of his career from the recording of Walking in the Air all the way to becoming a star presenter at the BBC.

COMEDY

You’d be forgiven for thinking it was the Leicester Comedy Festival already with the amount of stand up shows around at the moment, but we have to wait until February for that. Until then, check these out and keep your funny bones well and truly tickled.

Terry Alderton is well known for his roles in Eastenders and Lock Stock, plus many comedy shows on TV and radio and he’s hosting a night at Firebug with two hand-picked comics. Terry and Friends is on 8 September. Also at Firebug, Australian comic Tom Ballard returns with a shiny new show bursting with electric zingers and observations on 10 September.

Fresh from supporting Jack Whitehall and Michelle de Swarte, Laura Smyth’s brand-new show explores all aspects of modern life at her uncensored and ridiculous best. She’s at the Y on 13 September. Take a break from nappies and school routines and come along to see Instagram star Man Vs Baby who will be bringing his parental inspired comedy show Trolls and Tribulations to the Sue Townsend theatre on 14 September. The BBC’s biggest comedy talent search is back and is heading to the Y Theatre for the Midlands Regional Final on 18 September. Also at the Y on the 20 September will be comedy legend Shappi Khorsandi, stepping back into the 90s when she first cut her teeth on the stand up scene.

A few more legends of comedy are passing through Leicester in September. Nish Kumar will be bringing his politically charged new stand up show Nish, Don’t Kill My Vibe to De Montfort Hall on the 22 September. He’s quickly followed at De Mont by Milton Jones who’ll bring his ‘daft’ new show HA!lMILTON there on 25 September. Ed Byrne is a true legend of comedy and he’s bringing his most personal show to date, Tragedy Plus Time, to Melton Theatre on 25 September. You might remember her from Hi-de-Hi, but Su Pollard is an accomplished on stage performer and she brings her one woman show Still Fully Charged to Loughborough Town Hall on 27 September.

SPORT

It’s the end of the cricket season and the start of winter sports, and with Leicester being the UK’s sporting capital (yes we said it, and with trophy winning teams across four different sports, we’re holding to it!)

Currently third and fourth in division 2, Leicestershire County Cricket Club take on Yorkshire in the County Championship at Grace Road on the 9 September, then they prepare to face Derbyshire on the 26 September as they reach the business end of the season.

Leicester City are back in the Premier League! While we may be expecting a long and hard road this season, it’s great to see top level football back at the King Power stadium. The Foxes take on Everton at Filbert Way on 21 September. It’s not just the men who are battling at the highest level. Leicester City women secured another season of Women’s Super League football last year and they’re taking on Arsenal at home on the 29 September.

Donington Park is one of the top motorsports circuits in the county and the Bennetts British Superbike Championship will see some of the best bike racers in the World at the track from 27-29 September for three days of high octane 180mph wheel-to-wheel action.

And finally, the rugby is back too as on the 29 September old rivals Leicester Tigers and Bath duke it out at the Mattioli Woods Welford Road stadium. With new coach Michael Cheika and brand new signings expected to be debuted, we’re all hoping this season is where the Tigers return to their place at the top of the English Premiership.
