This half term Leicester and Leicestershire are filled with family friendly events, activities and days out. From street art to cycling and history to exhibitions, come and explore the city and see what we have to offer!
Bring the Paint
The start of half term sees the conclusion of the Bring the Paint Festival and will give you the chance to not only tour the amazing new creations made by internationally recognised street artists, but get involved in fun activities. Download the Graffwalk app and follow the trails to discover Leicester’s amazing Street Art and then get involved in the celebrations.
On Saturday 25 May, Jubilee Square is transformed into a Skate and BMX park soundtracked by live DJs, then on Sunday 26 May head to The Mill in Frog Island for a day filled with have a go activities, food, face painting and lots more!
Explore the city
The streets of Leicester are coming alive on Sunday 26 May as Open Streets and Heritage Sunday return. Open Streets is a celebration of cycling where you can explore Leicester’s closed off streets and take part in loads of fun activities across the city centre.
Then head over to the Newarke and explore the most historic part of Leicester as a number of rarely seen places open their doors for Heritage Sunday. Explore the Magazine Gateway, Leicester Castle’s Great Hall and St Mary de Castro churches for free or book onto a tour!
Bosworth Battlefield
At Bosworth Battlefield on 27 May kids from 5-14 can enter Knight School! Don the armour, pull down the visor and your young squires can learn to fight like a knight with Sir John of Bosworth. For those brave enough to take on this knightly challenge – pre-book on to the Knight School, learn how to fight gallantly and you will be rewarded with a certificate for all of your hard work.
Running from Sat 25 May – Sun 2 June join the Mythical Monster Hunt around the Battlefield. For just £2 per sheet, help the staff round them up before they get up to any more mischief? Then on Sat 1 and Sun 2 June, Harrington Household Living History take over. They are a small friendly family group of re-enactors who portray life during the late medieval period. Activities include archery displays, armoury talks, medieval board games, as well a chance for children to get involved in a bill drill. Just £3 per person with under 3s free.
Family activities
Running throughout half term at the Curve, a delightful adaptation of the best selling children’s book Dear Zoo. This production will delight all those who have read the book (both young and old) as it unfolds with puppets, music and lots of audience interaction. For children aged 1-101!
Abbey Pumping Station is one of our best loved attractions and totally free of charge so perfect for a cheap day out. On Tuesday 28 May, they’re holding a Half Term railway day where you can take a ride on their narrow gauge steam engine for just 50p per person! Cheaper than chips!
If you go down to the 1620s House and Garden on the 28 May, then you’ll be in for a big surprise as the Teddy Bears' Picnic will be there. Ideal for kids aged 3-8, there will be Games, Crafts, Hunts and the Best Bear Competition. Then from 30 May – 2 June there’s a fantastic Folklore Hunt for the kids to take part in, activity sheets are just £2 from the entrance.
Also on the 28 May at Newarke Houses Museum, come to visit and see the museum’s beautiful garden in full bloom with Garden Delights. Bring a picnic and take part in garden games. Enjoy butterfly and garden themed crafts, a garden trail, and much more. Just £4 for activities if you book in advance.
On 30 May at the Guildhall in Leicester kids can make their own clay castles and creations as well as get involved in trails throughout the day. Come along in fancy dress as a princess or knight!
All half term at the King Richard III Visitor Centre discover a key part of the story of his discovery and identification as you can explore DNA with a range of engaging activities! Build a DNA strand with jelly tots, craft a wearable DNA bracelet, and fold an origami double helix. Activities are included in admission and available all day Monday to Friday.
Loads of active fun
If the kids need tiring out, then there are loads of places to get active in the city centre.
Treetop Golf have free face painting on Bank Holiday Monday 27, Tuesday 28 & Wednesday 29 May from 12-4pm. They have new Jungle Shakes (choose from Chocky-Wocky, Strawberry Slurp, Bananarama or Mango-Go-Go), family Saver tickets are available all day, everyday.
If you head to Lane 7 from Monday to Wednesday, book bowling and you can get an hour gaming for free. Book on their site and the team there will sort the rest.
Ninja Warrior is one for the whole family to try (and regret the next day), but this awesome indoor activity centre based on the TV show is the perfect way to spend an hour!
Sixes Social Cricket in the heart of Leicester’s Cultural Quarter is the perfect place to spend a few hours. Grab some food, hit a few sixes in the batting nets or book a karaoke room. It’s perfect for families, suitable for all abilities (or lack of abilities!) and awesome fun.
East Street Lanes near the train station offers bowling, a retro arcade, pool plus food and drink. And their next door venue Caddyshackers offers indoor crazy golf, axe throwing, interactive darts and lots more.
