Free days out with the kids in Leicester Half term.  Leicester has some great days out, events and attractions for all the family. Read on to find out more what Leicester has in store for you!

Leicester Comedy Festival and Kids Comedy Festival

It’s finally here, bigger and better than ever. The Leicester Comedy Festival has taken over our city and there are shows running all week long. There are also more than 90 family friendly shows as the UK Kids Comedy Festival runs alongside the main programme.

Exhibitions and museums

A brand new exhibition at Leicester Museumis an exciting and immersive journey into the world of graffiti art. Paint x Pixel is presented by Bring The Paint and MBD and uses large-scale projections and in-depth interviews to tell the fascinating stories of some of the most high-profile graffiti writers of today.

Also at Leicester Museum, Leicester Vistas take a look at our city with new eyes as you explore views of our home from Leicester Museums & Galleries fine art collection, contrasted by photographs from Leicester City Council's photographic archive.

Over at Newarke Houses Museum and Westcotes library, Popping to the Shops is an exciting project dedicated to the people of Narborough Road. It aims to tell their stories of living and working in the area.

Visit Abbey Pumping Station for their half term Railway Day where you can take a ride on their steam locomotive Leonard. Entry to the museum is free and train rides cost just 50p per person!

Out and about

Celebrate the Chinese New Year at Bosworth Battlefield! They’ve invited all 12 animals of the Zodiac for a fun day out. The Dog wants to take a selfie with her friends to mark the occasion, but the team can’t find Henry the Dragon! Search the Bosworth site to help them find him!

Come along to Gorse Hill City Farm during half term and you can meet their small animals every day at 11am. There are also guided tours and the chance to explore the farm’s residents and hear from the people who care for them.

If you fancy your animals a little bigger then go on a Gibbon Mission at Twycross, kids can explore the zoo and pick up codes to unlock an exclusive badge! And when you pay once, you can return for the rest of the year for free. Fantastic value for the whole family.

Head to the award winning King Richard III Visitor Centre on Thursday 22 February and kids go free! Up to three children aged 15yrs and under can visit for free with any one paying adult. While you’re there play their free ‘Rex Factor: Lost in Time’ game. Then once you’re done at the KRIII then head across to the Cathedral to see the newly refurbished interiors and of course the last resting place of King Richard himself, all for free!

Join a mission to Venus at the National Space Centre this half term and explore the hottest and most inhospitable planet in our solar system. Kids will love finding out more about our closest neighbour. Book now to include entry into additional talks, craft sessions, and take a low Earth orbit cruise from the Tetrastar Spaceport.

Family active fun in the city

If the weather turns wet, windy or freezing (and let’s be fair, that’s quite possible in February) then Leicester is full of great indoor activities to keep the kids occupied. Treetop Adventure Golf in the Highcross allows you to putt round the jungle, Boost Leicester gets them bouncing, you can experience the excitement of the TV show at the official Ninja Warrior park at St Georges. Bowl, chuck axes or golf at East Street Lanes and Caddyshackers near the train station, experience an amazing atmosphere, putt round the most fiendish adventure golf in the city or try the pool-theme bowling at Lane7, and last but not least the whole family can try themselves in the nets at Sixes Social Cricket (which also offers karaoke rooms!)

At the theatre

Coming to Curve this half term is My Beautiful Laundrette, based on Hanif Kureishi’s iconic and Oscar-nominated screenplay and last brought to the stage in 2019 directed by Nikolai Foster. This one if for the adults, so make a date for this seminal story set to a backdrop of nationalism, racial tensions, financial crisis, political turmoil and awesome 80s tunes.

Enjoy a half term pantomime as Aladdin comes to Loughborough Town Hall. The classic tale of the poor street urchin who falls in love with a beautiful Princess and meets a Genie who can answer all his prayers.

Free fun for half term

On Sunday 25 February take a free tour of the historic Guildhall. Built in 1390 as a meeting place for the Guild of Corpus Christi, it is believed that Shakespeare performed here. Find out about its long and storied history.

There are of course loads of outdoor activities that you can take the kids throughout the week, if the weather holds. Why not explore the beautiful Abbey Park where the spring flowers will just be coming up, the wildlife and lakes of Watermead Park, take a walk down the riverside at Aylestone Meadows or explore the University of Leicester’s Botanic Gardens.

Take a look at this great Reel by local influencer Be-Lavie who has wrapped up some of the city’s best free attractions if you’re looking for a day out on a budget!
