Coming to Leicester soon is Tour de Moon! But just what is it? Well, it’s a festival, a celebration of nightlife, a mind-expanding experience, combining art, music, exhibitions, sustainability and a commitment to equality, but it’s so much more than that…
Tour de Moon takes the work of young artists and creates a direct response to the world we live in. It invites us all to imagine a new way of thinking, dreaming and doing to create alternative futures. It is a multi-city festival which celebrates nightlife and youth countercultures from the UK and beyond through a series of free public events.
Travelling from Leicester to Newcastle and Southampton, with a convoy of sustainable vehicles, you can see and experience Tour de Moon in Leicester from 13-16 May.
Why the Moon?
Well aside from it looking amazing in our night sky, the moon is a blank canvas where anything is possible. It’s where things don’t just appear as they are, but also as they could be. Nightmares, hallucinations, visions or fantasies all make our experience of nightlife unique and encourage us to use our imaginations to forge new possibilities.
What’s going on?
Moon Convoy: The centrepiece of Tour de Moon is a sustainable armada of vehicles, which will be stopping in towns and cities across the UK. Along with Leicester, Newcastle and Southampton it will stop in nine other towns and cities across the country. It features floats and interactive pieces and you can see it in Humberstone Gate throughout the festival!
Expect cosmic transformations through live music and DJ sets, a nine metre Squid, talks, film screenings, an inflatable game designed with NASA and SETI Institute, and a larger than life red phone through which visitors can talk to the Moon.
Moon Talks: shape our future through talks, performance, performed manifestos and sensory delights! Expect a vibrant mix of voices sharing their experiences of nightlife through their passion for the moon, science, dancing and debates. These are being held at the African Caribbean Centre, Bishop St Church and 2Funky Music Café.
Moon Cinema: a collection of original new short films selected through an international competition. These films introduce fresh concepts, new aesthetics, important messages on care and youth countercultures and their experiences with nightlife. Join them in the Highcross Shopping Centre.
Moon Experiences: two of the units in the Highcross Shopping Centre have been transformed for this amazing experience which creates surreal and unusual theatrical spaces. Contributors include Riz Ahmed, Rival Consoles, Gruff Rhys, Kate Tempest, Jarvis Cocker and more.
Moon Games: what if the Moon was a psychedelic inflatable playground; a lunar landscape on which to play Moon Games? Head to the Morningside Arena to discover this amazing experience, aimed at reanimate support and funding for youth clubs in the UK.
Moon Music: merges popular music with recordings of the galaxy, to create a new musical genre and an incredible club night experience. Come along to the 2Funky Music Café to experience Moon Music!
There’s also a Moon Hotline where you can have an AI-powered conversation with the Moon, the Moon Press magazine and an afterparty like no other at 2Funky Street Kitchen.
