Spring is a wonderful time, and especially when it means that we can see all the amazing wildlife emerging into the sunshine. Even more so when those animals are small and fluffy, so here’s a guide to some of the best places to see those beautiful creatures!
A special new arrival
Twycross Zoo was in the news last year when they revealed the arrival of their new baby Bonobo. the baby was named Upendi, inspired by a love song from The Lion King II, and ‘Upendo’ which means love in Swahili. Twycross Zoo is the only place in the UK that you can see Bonobos (and the three other great apes) and if you book your visit now then you could get your chance to see Upendi and the rest of the Bonobos in their new enclosure.
Flying high
While Leicester Cathedral is currently undergoing renovations, if you stand outside our Richard III Visitor Centre and look up, its very likely that you’ll see the resident Peregrine Falcons who have set up home in the Cathedral’s spire.
Frolicking in the fields
It’s the time of year when the fields of Leicestershire are filled with the bleats of gambolling lambs, and there’s no better place to see them than walking across the fields at Wistow, take the public pathways and stay at a respectful distance and you can get a close up view of these beautiful creatures. Then when you’ve done, warm up in the café at the Wistow Rural Centre and indulge in a little retail therapy!
Down on the farm
Leicestershire is full of family farms where you can see (and feed) all kinds of animals, and as we go through spring they’ll also be full of beautiful baby animals. Stonehurst Farm near Loughborough has just welcomed their first baby lambs and piglets of the year and there are sure to be more on the way.
Gorse Hill City Farm is just outside the city centre and is the perfect way to spend a couple of hours. Take a wander round the animal paddocks and meet their sheep, cows and goats! Manor Farm Park has a whole range of experiences, including falconry displays and owl holding, and over easter you can meet chicks and bunnies in their animal chat room.
In the south west of the county, Paradise Found Farm Park has a wide variety of animals, from all the usual farm animals to reindeer, rhea, alpacas and giant tortoise! There’s also a large indoor play area for the kids to run off that pent-up energy!
Awesome Alpacas
For something a little different, head to Charnwood Alpacas where there are a whole range of outdoor experiences, from horse riding to donkey walks and a 90 minute Alpaca experience. You can also get up close and personal with the baby alpacas, or ‘Cria’. Their Cria Watch is an unforgettable experience and is usually available from May.
