Traditional rough and tumble
It’s one of the oldest sporting fixtures in Leicestershire. Pagan tradition meets modern-day Easter revelry with the rough and tumble spectacle of the Hallaton bottle-kicking contest. This Easter Monday (18 April), rival villagers from Hallaton and Medbourne will compete in the age-old contest to wrestle barrels, known as bottles, across one of two streams.
Time for something cheesy
It’s the rural capital of food and Melton Mowbray hosts the UK’s largest dedicated cheese fair from 30 April to 1 May. More than 70 artisanal cheesemakers from across the UK gather with around 300 cheeses to try and buy, a cheese theatre programme, tutored tastings, demonstration workshops and more.
Time to dance
An exciting showcase of performances, discussions and workshops return to Leicester with the Let's Dance International Frontiers festival. Aimed at performers, creators and those who love dance, the festival will be back on stage from 29 April–8 May, exploring this year’s theme; Responding to Space, Place, People and Time.
Tour de Moon
We’re a city that loves to celebrate and we’re proud to announce Leicester’s newest festival. From 13-16 May Tour De Moon encourages everyone to take part in a series of universal events that stir the imagination, champion creativity and make people consider their place in the universe.
Street Art to blow your mind
Leicester has become world famous for its street art and at the end of May, the award-winning Bring The Paint International Street Art Festival is returning! The festival brings together artists from across the globe to transform Leicester city centre with world-class music and art, as well as a workshops, food and drink, and a skate and BMX arena. And you’ll get to see them working on amazing new murals, street art and graffiti.
Glastonbudget
While it may not have the star power of Worthy Farm, Glastonbudget is one of the best ‘tribute festivals and is set to return this June. This year will be a ‘Best of British Weekend’ with The Bootleg Beatles and Mercury confirmed to headline the event. Recreating the biggest hits from the biggest British bands, renowned tribute acts Antarctic Monkeys, Kazabian and Oasish have also joined the line-up!
The home of heavy metal
Donington is world famous amongst metalheads and you will have your world rocked at the epic Download Festival in June. Rock royalty including Kiss, Iron Maiden and Megadeth plus heavy metal icons like Biffy Clyro, The Pretty Reckless, Korn and Mastodon.
Halal, is it food you’re looking for?
The Halal Food Festival is coming to Leicester on 26 June. Expect world cuisine, live cooking demos, street food stations, a mocktail lounge, special guest chefs and influencers, plus much more!
Go kart fun
Hinckley hosts its 11th annual Soap Box Derby on 26 June, and promises a tremendous day out for teams and spectators alike. Watch as entrants steam down the 200 metre Castle Street hill for a chance to become the ultimate driving champ!
Music in the National Forest
The Timber Festival sets up camp in the glades of Feanedock from 1–3 July, for a weekend of music and art that celebrates nature and re-examines our relationship with the natural world. Pitch a tent and immerse yourself in music, poetry, art and new ideas!
Who ate all the pies?
It was us! And once again, Melton Mowbray sets an essential date for the foodie diary! A national celebration of pies returns with PieFest! Discover a huge selection of sweet and savoury, hot and cold delights from 6-7 August.
Take a Journey through Leicester
A chance to explore artworks which look at global cultures and the refugee experience through visual and digital art, virtual reality, performances, films and animation. Journeys Festival International returns to Leicester from 12-15 August.
The World Reimagined
Leicester is one of seven UK cities that will host a national art education project this year which aims to transform understanding of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The World Reimagined will bring a trail of 10 stunning globe sculptures to the streets of Leicester from 13 August to 16 October.
Going off with a bang
Now in its 14th year, Leicestershire’s Fireworks Championship sees three of the UK’s best firework companies compete against each other in a choreographed display at Belvoir Castle, followed by a spectacular finale! Book now for a fantastic conclusion to August!
The best WWII re-enactment in the UK
Tanks, trenches, the roar of a Spitfire, step back into the 1940s at this amazing event. Held over a 100-acre site in Cosby, The Victory Show takes place in early September and gives an insight into the war years allowing you to get up close to the static aircraft, tanks and military vehicles.
More Melton food!
The East Midland’s biggest Food Festival returns to Melton. Save the 1-2 October for this huge foodie festival, featuring around 200 stalls peddling the finest cheese, pies, charcuterie, and chocolate. Then in November, you can enjoy all things chocolate – from pizza, puddings, liqueurs and beer... even chocolate kebabs – from some of the UK’s best chocolatiers at Melton’s annual Chocfest. Make a date for 19-20 November.
