Half term is approaching fast and if you’re looking for something to keep the kids (and you!) occupied then take a look at our run-down of some of the best family days out in Leicestershire!
Awesome animals
Our county is chock full of loads of farms that are open all year round. Discover what goes on behind the scenes and see some of the beautiful animals. Gorse Hill City Farm is right near the city centre and is open every day from 10am-4pm. Out towards Loughborough, Stonehurst Family Farm has animals, tractors rides, beautiful surroundings, a tea house and farm shop, and a motor museum! And if you book online you get free feed for the animals.
And of course if you head to the west of our county then you can spend a day exploring at Twycross Zoo. The home of monkeys and all four great apes, but a whole menagerie of other incredible creatures, including their snow leopards and tigers.
Exploring and adventuring
If you want to get that clean country air in your lungs there are loads of places to explore and take advantage of the beautiful Leicestershire countryside. Snibston Colliery Park has a huge nature reserve and mountain bike trail all built on what was an old mine and spoil heap.
If cycling is your thing, then there are loads of places to rent a bike and explore. Take a ride round Charnwood with National Forest e-bikes or Hicks Lodge, who have a dog friendly café and cycle hire.
Closer to the city, right near Fosse Park you can rent a bike from Rutland Cycling and explore miles of traffic-free cycle paths in Everards Meadows. And when you’ve done, drop into the brewery for dinner. Or if you’ve got your own, then why not take a look at Choose How You Move, who have a load of recommended routes for cyclists.
Marvellous museums
Half term is the perfect time to dress up a little education as a fun trip, and these really are fun. Uncover the story of the King who was discovered under a car park at the King Richard III Visitor Centre and then take a trip to see the site of his last battle at Bosworth Battlefield.
The Leicester Museum and Art Gallery on New Walk has dinosaurs, mummies and loads of fantastic art, all for free! You can then head to Newarke Houses Museum which allows you to explore the history of Leicester itself. Both museums have fantastic short-term exhibitions also.
Head to Loughborough and you can visit the Charnwood Museum where you can learn about how Ladybird books were created in the town, or to the Harborough Museum, where you can see the Hallaton Treasure, one of the most important Iron Age finds in UK history.
Indoor fun
If the weather takes a turn for the worse there are loads of indoor activities to keep you going. Trampoline parks like Boost give you the chance to relax while the kids work off all that pent up energy. There are also some new additions to the city with an official Ninja Warrior UK adventure park, What a Goal, which offers indoor football and cricket, plus kids soft play, and an amazing interactive virtual experience at Roamdome.
Wander through an indoor jungle and test your putting skills at Treetop Adventure Golf near the Highcross Shopping Centre. Near Leicester train station you can find Caddyshackers crazy golf which has some cool courses to test your skills on, you can also try your hand at axe throwing after you’ve finished your 18 holes! Caddyshackers is right next door to East Street Lanes bowling alley who have a great arcade and food, and they’ve always got some great family deals for half term.
On the other side of the city Lane 7 is a huge new entertainment complex which has all kinds of fun on offer from ten pin bowling to pool, ping pong to crazy golf and a fantastic arcade too. You can also grab something great to eat from their amazing food hall.
Something a bit different
If you’re looking for a different type of day out we have those in abundance! Conkers is a great family day out in the National Forest with exhibits, walks and some great outdoor activities for the kids. Right near Market Harborough, Foxton Locks is an absolutely unique attraction, you can watch canal boats pass by and if you’re lucky you’ll be able to see one pass through the locks that travel up and down a 75ft hill.
You can also ride the rails and take the same trip that Thomas Cook’s passengers did in 1841 when they took the Great Central Railway from Leicester to Loughborough in the first ever ‘package holiday’. Chug through the Leicestershire countryside on an original Steam train, and take advantage of seasonal events throughout the year!
