It’s been a crazy 12 months. From entering into the New Year in lockdown, home schooling and taking our daily exercise when we could, through to re-opening in the summer and relative normality throughout the autumn, this year has been a wild ride. We’ve gone through our archives to remind you of the highs we saw throughout the year, so sit back, grab a mince pie and enjoy a quick look back at (the first half) of our year. January
It was cold! January saw the county blanketed with snow, creating a winter wonderland across the whole of Leicestershire. Some enterprising students even created an igloo on Victoria Park!
The snow provided us with a brief respite from being locked inside our houses for nearly 24 hours a day. How amazing did New Walk look covered in snow?
February
The Leicester Comedy Festival returned with a difference. For the first time in its 28 year history the festival went online, drawing on comedians from its entire history including Stewart Lee, Lucy Beaumont, Ed Byrne to create a virtual festival like no other! The festival will return in person for 2022!
The virtual festivals continued in February, with the start of ‘HOME’. Run by local promoters the Robot Needs Home Collective, the shows celebrated ten of Leicester’s best musical acts in some unique settings. The shows kicked off with local singer songwriter Grace Petrie appearing at Leicester Cathedral and you can still watch them all online.
March
The best thing about Spring is seeing all the blossom come out and there are some fantastic places to see it in Leicester. Our friend Belavie showcased some of them in this great little video.
March also saw the 10th birthday of one of Leicester’s most loved internet pages. If you don’t follow Cool As Leicester then go and do it now. They will tell you what’s happening in the city, from new places to eat and drink, great independent shops, through to following the fortunes of Leicester City. Congrats Gabby, here’s to many more!
April
The end to some lockdown measures came in April, with outside spaces being opened again. Many of our businesses were able to welcome back customers for the first time in nearly a year, and outdoor areas were filled with people keen to try a meal they hadn’t cooked themselves!
One thing that we may not have expected was the impact on the animals at Twycross Zoo. After just having their keepers for company, they were overjoyed to see the visitors again, with William the Chimpazee so excited to see crowds again that he started clapping them, which led to spontaneous round of applause breaking out. May
Was it really back in May that we watched Kasper and Wes lift the FA Cup?! So many iconic memories from the day, from Youri’s thunderbolt from 30 yards to Khun Top crying as he held the cup he promised his Dad he’d win for their club. But we have to go for the trophy lift we’d been waiting 137 years for.
May also brought the world to Leicester, almost literally. Luke Jerram’s stunning installation Gaia saw a huge replica of our planet hanging in Leicester Cathedral, alongside a programme of events
June
We were finally able to share our Uncover The Story campaign with you. Telling the stories of Leicester’s 2000 year history from the discovery of Richard III and our place as the birthplace of tourism through to some of the county’s best kept secrets, Uncover The Story is still inspiring visitors to step off the beaten track and discover what Leicestershire has to offer.
The start of the summer saw the opening of a very Leicester place to eat and drink. Right next to Fosse Park, our favourite local brewers launched Everards Meadows, which offers stunning surroundings, fantastic food, brilliant beer and tours of the brewery to boot!

January brought a picturesque blanket of snow, transforming Leicestershire into a winter wonderland. The snowy scenery, including an igloo crafted by enterprising students on Victoria Park, was a delightful change from the monotony of lockdown.
February saw the Leicester Comedy Festival go virtual for the first time in its 28-year history, featuring an impressive lineup of comedians. The Robot Needs Home Collective also launched ‘HOME’, a series of online music performances showcasing Leicester’s talent, kicking off with Grace Petrie at Leicester Cathedral.
March was all about springtime blossoms and celebrating Cool As Leicester's 10th anniversary. The latter continues to be a fantastic resource for local events and happenings, from new eateries to Leicester City updates.
April marked a significant easing of lockdown restrictions, allowing businesses to reopen and people to enjoy dining out again. Twycross Zoo's animals, particularly William the Chimpanzee, were thrilled to welcome back visitors, adding a heartwarming touch to the reopening.
May was a month of triumph with Leicester City lifting the FA Cup, fulfilling a long-awaited dream for fans. The month also featured Luke Jerram's Gaia installation at Leicester Cathedral, offering a captivating view of our planet.
June introduced the Uncover The Story campaign, celebrating Leicester’s rich history and hidden gems. Additionally, Everards Meadows opened near Fosse Park, offering a fantastic spot for food, drinks, and brewery tours.
As we look back on these events, it’s clear that Leicester has had a vibrant and eventful year. As we head into the second half, let’s also consider our personal financial journeys.
