Ay up me duck, so you’ve decided to take a short trip to Leicester. We wanted to give you a run down of the city that we love, and help you to pass for a local when you visit. From cobs to the clockeh and Englebert to Easylife, we’ve got the perfect guide to everything Leicester to help you uncover the story of our great city.
It’s often joked that the name of our city was designed to confuse outsiders, as was attested to when Leicester City won the Premier League and befuddled commentators around the world mangled their name in a variety of amusing ways (lucky it wasn’t Loughborough!). It’s quite simple really. Less-ter.
Local expressions are something that’ll catch anyone out when they head to a new area. There are a few things you’ll need to know if you’re going to pass for a local in Leicester, and the first is a cob. No, not sweetcorn. A cob is our word for any type of bread roll. Ask for a roll, bap, butty or batch and you’ll immediately be outed as an outsider.
So you’ve got your bacon cob, packet of Walkers (cheese and onion in a blue packet of course) and bottle of pop and you’re ready to start your day. Obviously this being Leicester, there’s loads of vegetarian options, especially down (or up?) the Golden Mile, where you can find all the best Indian restaurants.
When you’re in town… yes town, City are the football team. If you’re going into the city centre, you’re going ‘up town’. When you get there, the perfect place to start is the Clockeh, or Clock Tower. This iconic landmark in the city centre has been a meeting place for generations of Chisits. Why Chisits? Because when people from Leicester went on their ollies to Skeggeh and ordered a pint at the bar, they would invariably say ‘ow mu chissit?’
From there, head down a jitteh (a small passageway between two buildings) and you’ll find Leicester's famous open air market, where you’ll be able to see Lineker’s fruit and veg stall. You’re not going to find Gary there, but he did once work on his Dad’s stall before the glamour of football took him away from us.
We are very proud of all our celebrity Chisits though. As befits such a historic place, we have plenty of notable names from the past… Thomas Cook and his statue outside the train station, nine day Queen Lady Jane Grey’s house at Bradgate Park and Leicester’s answer to Sherlock Holmes ‘Tanky’ Smith, whose various likenesses and disguises can see seen on ‘Top Hat Terrace’ along London Road.
With the success of our sporting teams, we’ve seen loads of sporting heroes from the terraces of Welford Road and Filbert Street, from Tigers’ world cup winning captain Martin Johnson to legendary City keeper Peter Shilton. We’ve also produced a snooker world champion in the Jester from Leicester Mark Selby.
While we may not have the musical pedigree of Liverpool and Manchester, Leicester artists have made their mark on the music scene. Kasabian gained global success after their breakout singles LSF and Club Foot, carrying on the tradition of Leicester’s elder statesmen Englebert Humperdinck and Showaddywaddy. The Fun Loving Criminals drummer ‘Uncle’ Frank Benbini grew up here, and newer bands like The Young Knives and Easylife are now setting the charts alight and putting the city’s music scene back on the map.
We’ve also had our share of stars of stage and screen. Hobbit actor Richard Armitage hails from Huncote, Pirates of the Caribbean and This Is England’s Stephen Graham is an honorary Chisit after settling in Leicestershire and ER’s Parminder Nagra grew up in the city.
And of course, we can’t finish this rundown of local celebs without mentioning Leicester royalty in Richard and David Attenborough. You can still see the house they grew up in on the University of Leicester campus, where their dad was Vice-Chancellor.
Hopefully this list will stop you getting mardy and leaving with a ‘cob on’ (that’s angry, not bread rolls!) and we can welcome you back to our beautiful city where you can uncover more of our fantastic stories.
