March Highlights
Spring is on its way which means we can close the door on the dreary wintery months and breath in fresh spring air. Let’s look forward to a colourful calendar of events across Leicester.
Light Up Your Life
Lighting up the city this month is the digital take on a traditional light festival. Light Up Leicester will give visitors a chance to experience seven large scale interactive installations across the city. Unmissable and a terrific example of how we can interact through sound, sensors, light and temperature. Watch as they work together to create stunning spectacles of light across the city from 5-8 March
There have been numerous light festivals across the UK, but we will be the first city to witness three new pieces specially commissioned for the festival. Shadowdance created by Huddersfield based Impossible will see shadows transformed into gigantic colourful silhouettes. Unexpected Connection by Eccentric Events of Northampton brings people together in an interactive LED tunnel and Leicester’s very own Mateus Domingo’s creation captures visitors ‘traces’ to give visitors the chance to leave their mark on the illuminations.
Everything is awesome
It’s about to get utterly awesome people as Leicester welcomes two amazing Lego events in March.
In a UK first, Ryan McNaught’s Brickman Experience comes to Leicester’s High Cross. Now who doesn’t love Lego? Its interactivity on a whole different level for little kids and big kids (yes mums, dads and grandparents too!).
The Brickman Experience will see 5 million LEGO bricks to create an epic exhibition showcasing some of the world’s largest and most detailed Lego models in the UK. Tickets are essential so make sure you get yours at www.brickman.com and takes place from 13 March-20 April.
The second of the Lego events takes place 14-15 March at the National Space Centre. Brickish Weekend 2020 will see the National Space Centre join forces with the Brickish Association to create a wonderful Lego weekend dedicated to the colourful plastic brick. It’s now in its tenth year and will see the entire building filled with huge LEGO creations, rare kits, planes, trains and automobiles.
Dissent & Displacement : A Modern Story
Dissent & Displacement : A Modern Story is a new exhibition taking place at New Walk Museum and Art Gallery. It’s about storytelling and the way we reflect on our lives. The inspiration for the exhibition is the museums German Expressionist collections and the artists refugee heritage. Contemporary printmaker Monica Pretzel explores through her art the theme of opposition, persecution and persistence. The exhibition on until 19 April.
Paint the town green
Forget painting the town red, why not paint the town green on St. Patricks Days. Leicester celebrates the annual celebration in style with the parade starting at the back of the Holy Cross church on New Walk and finishes at Jubilee Square on Sunday 15 March around 1ish. There is plenty of fun to be had!
Sunday at the Musicals
It’s about to get musical this March with Paul Barton Productions returning to the Leicester Haymarket Theatre. A new version of Sunday at the Musicals which takes place on Sunday 29 March at 7.30pm.
