Your guide to October in Leicester

It’s official. Summer is firmly behind us, but the choice is yours; you can either wallow in despair, or pick your head up and enjoy a month packed full of excellent events and awesome activities.


Black History Month 27 Sept 2019 - 31 Oct 2019

Running throughout October, Black History Month pulls together a programme of events that help understand the history and impact African and Caribbean communities have had in Leicester. The theme for 2019 is Archiving the Past, Reflecting the Future, which will focus on the artistic and cultural heritage of the East Midlands over the last 80 years, with a number of events and workshops taking place across the city, including thought provoking film screenings, and lively dance performances. There's plenty to get involved with, so make sure you check out the full programme of events.


Design Season 2  4 Oct 2019 - 25 Oct 2019

Also taking place this month is the fantastic Design Season 2, where over three weeks, at LCB Depot and various other venues across the city, Leicester celebrates design with exhibitions, presentations, collaborations, open studios, workshops, activities, networking, awards, and more. As part of DS2, the Leicestershire and Rutland Society of Architects are hosting Leicester's second annual architecture festival: Love Architecture, which features a series of events which are open to everyone; exploring the theme of local architecture.


Anita Corbin  14 Sept 2019 - 27 Oct 2019

Art and Design lovers have much to enjoy this month, with a fantastic exhibition by renowned British photographer; Anita Corbin. On display are one hundred striking images of powerful UK Women, including celebrities, famous personalities and unsung heroines from across the decades. You’ll see some familiar faces, like Seventies rocker Suzi Quatro, Olympian Boxer; Nicola Adams, as well as newscaster and Morecambe and Wise star-turn; Angela Rippon. The exhibition also focuses on ‘ordinary women’ doing extraordinary jobs and achieving firsts in their fields, such as Brigadier Sharon Nesmith, the first woman commander of a brigade of 5000 front line troops, Baroness Patricia Scotland, First Woman Attorney General and Megan Knowles-Bacon, First Woman to be made an officer of the Magic Circle.


One Giant Leap 11 Oct 2019 - 20 Oct 2019

One giant leap brings a whole host of half term fun this half term! So much that we’ve featured it in our write-up on October’s Half Term. Make sure you check it out!

Overview Effect is just one of the awe-inspiring events taking place during the half term. A breath-taking outdoor projection celebrating the 1969 moon-landing, along with a stunning soundtrack depicting the view of the Apollo 11 astronauts.

Museum of moon 11 Oct 2019 - 20 Oct 2019

Making a long-awaited return this year is the 7-metre model of the Moon, created by Luke Jerram. The exhibit, titled Museum of the Moon, will be returning to Leicester after an incredibly successful tour that’s taken it across the world and back. The detailed recreation is comprised of NASA lunar imagery, at a scale of 1:500,000, meaning that each centimetre represents almost 5km on the Moon’s surface. Anyone who missed it last time should definitely give it a look, it’s not often an exhibit offers such a sense of awe and wonder.


Diwali 13 Oct 2019 - 27 Oct 2019

Diwali in Leicester is a big deal, where thousands upon thousands of visitors join us along the ‘Golden Mile’ in a dazzling celebration of light and life. We’ve put together a guide on everything going on throughout this year’s Diwali celebrations – make sure you give it a read!
