June Highlights

June has arrived, which means it is officially the start of summer according to the astronomical calendar. Actually, that’s a slight exaggeration since summer officially starts on the 21st June - the longest day of the year. That means seemingly endless summer days, perfect for getting involved with tons of events and activities to make your summer an unforgettable one. There’s no excuses for not getting out and about, as Leicester has so much in-store this summer. It sounds like a cliché, but there really is something for everyone! So, let’s make a start!

Riverside Festival

We featured The Riverside Festival in last month’s highlight article too, but we are so excited that we just had to mention it again. The Riverside Festival is part of Leicester’s Summer of Festivals and makes a welcome return for the 22nd year, taking place over two days. There will be four areas giving visitors a chance to have fun both on and off the water.

If you head over to Bede Park you’ll find plenty of family activities including a fun fair, food stalls, arts and crafts, beer tent and an acoustic music stage. Over on the Piazza there will be a large music stage featuring great live bands playing music for every generation. Over at Western Boulevard you can take in the buzzing atmosphere as the hugely popular street market makes a long-awaited return with arts, crafts, tasty street food, and the Ride Leicester cycling area.

For a more leisurely experience, why not walk along the River Soar and Mile Straight to watch the colourful narrow boat rally, boat trips, canoes, boat rides and demonstrations and enjoy a chance to view and buy work from local artists at Art on the River. Check out more details in the Riverside Festival brochure.

Revive Festival

If the sixties invoke feelings of nostalgia then you’ll love the Revive Festival. It’s a fantastic chance to re-visit the 1960’s over three weekends in June. The Revive Festival perfectly complements the Mods: Shaping a Generation and Modified exhibitions at New Walk Museum and Soft Touch Arts, which are until 30 June. The festival will be made up of vintage fairs, live music and events, vinyl record collections, street food, family fun and more scooters than the set of Quadrophenia.

Take in the sights and sounds of an era that influenced world fashion, music and popular culture!

Gurdas Maan

Now for something that transcends age and gender with living legend who has been wowing audiences for well over four decades. Gurdas Maan returns to De Montfort Hall in what is expected to be yet another sell out tour. The legendary singer/songwriter has been a key figure in the world of Punjabi folk music that appeals to every generation. His inspirational lyrics and enthralling stage presence will have you spellbound. It’s an event not to be missed, so get your tickets now and reserve your seats to witness the icon in full force.

Gin, Prosecco, Cider and Ale Evening

How about a refreshing tipple? If that’s sounds like music to your ears then pencil the 15th June into your diary with the Gin, Prosecco, Cider & Ale Evening taking place at Leicester Racecourse. It’s an event you won’t want to leave out of your social calendar, with plenty of horse racing, food and bar outlets as well as live music by the Oompah band.

Comic Con

Avid comic fans will love to hear that this fantastic convention is back for a fifth year! Featuring tons of awesome stuff crammed into one event, including a chance to learn how to draw your own comics, shop at the huge geek market, and meet well known artists and creators in the comic zone. It really is a unique event that happens only once a year in Leicester, so go ahead and embrace your inner geek – just don’t forget to buy your ticket in advance!

Fun crafts, music and family entertainment takes place at the gorgeous Foxton Locks on the 15th and 16th June. Come and listen to new and up and coming bands as well as popular local bands. There will be a large craft marquee where you can leisurely browse to your hearts content and hopefully pick up a bargain!
