Spring has sprung, the sun’s out (sometimes), and there’s plenty of things to get up to in Leicester this month!
Mods Shaping a Generation
This famous line sums it up best: “If you weren’t a Mod, you were a Rocker. If you were neither of those, you were nothing.”
Opening on April 13, this fantastic exhibition tells the story of the 1960’s Mod scene in Leicester and the surrounding area. The exhibition contains several scooters, unpublished images, and first-hand accounts of what life was like for young mods at the time.
If you fancy watching one of the UK’s most iconic films, set in the Mod era, make sure you head to New Walk Museum on the 14th April for a special screening of the timeless classic: Quadrophenia. The exhibition also showcases plenty of the original costumes and clothing from the film, provided by designer Roger K Burton.
The exhibition coincides with the upcoming REVIVE Festival in mid-June, where you can expect plenty of scooters, paraphernalia, and probably a lot of Mods! With many local organisations and businesses involved in the festival, there’ll be plenty of themed events, activities, and vintage inspired workshops. There are even more details yet to come, so keep your eyes peeled!

We’re sure you’ve heard of the ever-popular Ladies’ day at Leicester Racecourse, but did you also know about Gentlemen’s Day on April 27? There’s plenty to enjoy, with races throughout the day, live music and not to mention street food stalls and bars. If that’s not enough, you can test your skills at a penalty shootout, inflatable dartboard, crazy golf and more! In support of the REVIVE festival, the event will be Mod themed! Much like ladies’ day, half of the fun is dressing up for the occasion, and with a competition for ‘Best Dressed Mod Man’ the stakes are high, you could be in with a chance to win some incredible prizes!
LDIF
Each year to celebrate International Dance Day, Let’s Dance International Frontiers brings in performers from across the world for almost two weeks of world-class dance. LDIF19 celebrates the theme of Black Dance: A Contemporary Voice. With a full programme of discussion, performances, workshops, masterclasses and films, featuring artists from Italy, Japan, Haiti, USA, and Zimbabwe – it’s not one to miss!

St George’s Day
This family friendly festival returns once again to Orton Square on April 20. You can enjoy the dancing, music and live performances across the cultural quarter and the square itself, but make sure you’re on the lookout for the wandering T-Rex!
It wouldn’t be a traditional St George’s day without Maypole Dancing, but fear not, you’ll be able to join in with the professionals from 1:30pm. There’ll be plenty going on in the area, so make sure you check out the St George's Festival Brochure for full details of all the activities.
