Hurrah! British Summer Time is here, and we think longer evenings are surely a thing to celebrate. With the days getting longer, it’s safe to say summer is on its way – even if the weather doesn’t always get the memo. Leicester and its beautiful surrounding countryside offer the perfect reason to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.
You might be surprised to learn that parks and other green spaces account for over a quarter of the city area.
If you’re looking for a quiet break from the attractions of the city centre, you’re never far from a quiet, green oasis.
For over 125 years, Abbey Park has been a jewel in Leicester’s crown. The award-winning park retains much of its Victorian charm with formally planted flowerbeds; miniature railway; boating on its central lake and a tree-lined riverside promenade.
It’s also home to the Grade I-listed ruins of the twelfth century Leicester Abbey and the cute and colourful residents of Pets Corner.
The famous gardens at historic Belgrave Hall draw in visitors from all over the country. The serene walled gardens, with fragrant Edwardian roses and ancient mulberry trees, are open throughout the summer.
Visitors are also welcome at the University of Leicester’s Botanic Gardens. The 16 acres of landscaped Edwardian gardens are home to one of the most diverse plant collections in the region.
Bluebell woods are a beautiful celebration of the start of spring –vibrant carpets of flowers pop up around the county if you know where to look! The ancient woodland at Beacon Hill is a good place to start, as well as Swithland Woods, which adjoin Bradgate Park, where the local parish holds an outdoor Bluebell Service each May. A little off the beaten track into the National Forest near Coalville is Holly Hayes Wood – offering a peaceful place to explore the beauty of nature.
Whatever the weather, Foxton Locks is a day out that the whole family can enjoy. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, the famous flight of narrowboat locks is the largest on the English canal system.
Visitors can relax with a drink and a meal in the award-winning Foxton Locks Inn and watch narrowboats make their way along the canal, or see the past brought to life at the BoilerHouse centre.
If you just want to enjoy the weather and take in some stunning scenery with some al fresco dining in Leicester, a lazy lunch at the Kings Lock Tearooms in Aylestone Village is the hidden treasure you are looking for. The café, which is housed in the last remaining lock-keeper’s cottage in Leicester, is only open during British Summer Time. A dog friendly place along Leicester's beautiful waterside – we can’t think of a better place to stop and while away an hour or two in celebration of lighter evenings!
