Ashby de la Zouch is much more than an intriguing French sounding name. In the heart of the National Forest, Ashby de la Zouch has a real sense of je ne sais quoi but still retains a feel of a quintessential market town. Explore independent stores, swim outdoors in the region’s only Lido and marvel at the 12th century castle which played a key role in the English Civil War. Did you know it was also home to the much loved author Sue Townsend’s fictional character, Adrian Mole. You can even visit the library where Adrian started his first job!
If you want to put a foot in the past, then how about a visit to Moira Furnace. It’s one of the best-preserved examples of an Industrial Revolution foundry. Find out how minerals become iron then explore the countryside, craft village and nearby Conkers outdoor discovery centre. A former colliery site, but now the home of outdoor adventures and a chance for kids to get active in the countryside and explore the history of mining in Leicestershire. Explore the Discovery Centre, the Enchanted Forest adventure play zone, the interactive forest floor and the simulated tree top walk with a slide down the mineshaft.
Take a walk back in time and immerse yourself in the early 17th century experience that is 1620s House & Gardens. It’s a wonderful fully furnished house owned by the family living in the shadow of the Gunpowder plot.
Why not combine your visit with an overnight stay or short break. You’ll find quality self- catering accommodation in the heart of the National Forest at Hastings Retreat. Hastings Retreat is a complex of barn conversions set in 76 acres of woodland and beautiful countryside with a 3-acre private fishing and recreation lake for exclusive use by guests.
Situated 5 minutes from the historic market town of Ashby de la Zouch and next door to Hicks Lodge Cycle Centre.
