Rockingham Castle has stood on this wonderful escarpment position for almost 950 years. There are very few homes that have been owned by just one family since being relinquished as a royal Castle. Whether it is images of Kinights in shining armour, a Tudor house, a Victorian home staffed with servants, or contemporary art, Rockingham has it all.
William the Conqueror ordered a motte and bailey Castle to be built at Rockingham around 1070. The Castle has welcomed many King and Queens including Richard the Lionheart, King John, Edward I, and Queen Eleanor. Their lasting influence can still be seen in many parts of the castle and grounds today. Today the Castle is the home of James and Elizabeth Saunders Watson and their three children, the direct descendants of Edward Watson, who was granted Rockingham from Henry VIII.
