The Man Behind the Name – Kal Sangra

October 29th 2026

There are some people whose names become part of a city. Not because they seek attention, but because they quietly spend decades contributing to the place they love. Kal Sangra is undoubtedly one of those people.

Even those who have never met Kal will likely recognise the name. Over the years, it has become a familiar sight across Leicester, displayed on signs, shopfronts and properties throughout the city centre. His business, Kal Sangra Shonki Brothers, has been a long-standing fixture on Granby Street. The business traces its roots back to the 1960s and is recognised as one of the earliest Asian-owned estate agency businesses in England.

Yet while the name is widely known, it is the individual behind it that leaves the biggest impression. Kal is one of those rare people who seems able to make everyone feel welcome. Whether meeting someone for the first time or catching up with a familiar face, he brings the same warmth, energy and genuine interest in people. In an age where customer service often feels too transactional, those qualities stand out.

When approached about this article, Kal was genuinely surprised that anyone would take the time to tell his story and said he felt honoured to be recognised. Reflecting on what continues to motivate him after so many years in business, he shared:

“It is a rewarding feeling knowing clients are concluding their service with Kal Sangra Shonki Brothers on the start of a new journey, a new chapter, be it investment or owner occupation.

If I have the knowledge to help get them on this journey, then why not do all that I can to share it. My team is outstanding. We all work collectively together to provide a service we feel is second to none, using our local knowledge and expertise derived from more than 100 years of collective experience within the sector.”

Anyone passing along Granby Street may well spot Kal outside the office, chatting with customers, offering advice on homes displayed in the window, pointing visitors in the right direction or simply taking the time to have a conversation. It is a simple thing, but it speaks volumes about the pride in the business and the city he calls home.

Leicester born and bred, a passionate Leicester City supporter and a tireless advocate for the city centre, Kal has spent much of his working life championing Leicester. As the saying goes, you can take the boy out of Leicester, but you can’t take Leicester out of the boy. In Kal’s case, that seems particularly true.

While many know him through his professional work, they also know him as somebody willing to give his time back to the community. Whether supporting local causes, helping with charity events or lending his distinctive auctioneer’s voice to fundraising efforts, he has consistently played an active role in city life.

This isn’t simply a story about one business. It’s a story about the people who help shape the character of a city.

The city centre is more than its buildings and streets. It is the retailers who open their doors every morning. The cafés and restaurants that welcome customers throughout the day. The independent traders, family businesses and entrepreneurs who invest their time, energy and passion into Leicester year after year.

They help create the friendly, welcoming and ambitious spirit that makes Leicester what it is. They are the familiar faces people come to recognise. The people who build relationships, support communities and quietly make a difference over many years.

Businesses such as Kal Sangra Shonki Brothers, which has remained proudly rooted in Leicester while continuing to evolve and grow, are something the city should be proud of.
