Attractions in The National Forest

When you’re staying in the National Forest Leicestershire, there are so many things to do. Of course you can take in the beautiful countryside that has been transformed by the planting of 10 million trees in the region, but it’s the perfect opportunity to explore the historic locations, racetracks, rural shopping areas and family friendly attractions of the district.

Step back 400 years

Start your journey at Ashby de la Zouch Castle, the place that inspired Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe. You’ll journey back to the 15th century as you explore the ruins and its role in the English Civil War of the 1600s. Run by English Heritage, you can expect fully guided tours and regular events. The 1600s are also the theme for one of the area’s hidden gems as the 1620s House and Garden in Donington le Heath transports you back to a time of Gunpowder Plots and witches. This lovingly restored property was built in the 13th century and allows you to experience just what it was like in the 1600s.

The region’s industrial history

The National Forest is a result of replanting in an area that used to be home to all kinds of industry and that story is told at the Moira Furnace Museum and Country Park. Recently refurbished, Moira is one of the best preserved examples of an industrial revolution era blast furnace in the country. Once you’ve explored the museum you can enjoy the canalside walks and bike routes of the country park. Just a short distance away you can find Conkers, a family friendly attraction that tells the story of the area’s industry, but is also packed full of fun outdoor and indoor activities for the entire family.

Higher, further, faster

If you have a penchant for engineering, racing or just anything with wings and wheels, then you’re in the right place! Superbikes, Touring Cars, GT Cup and loads more all come to the home of British Motorsport Donington Park! Donington is also the place where rock and metal fans come to celebrate heavy music with the Download Festival!

Right next to East Midlands Airport you can find the East Midlands Aeropark aviation museum, with static displays of vintage aircraft including a Vulcan, a Nimrod and many more. Then if you want to explore the National Forest on two wheels you can head over to Hicks Lodge, a former coal mining site that is now the perfect place for cyclists with a café, bike hire and repair leading to some fantastic bike trails.

A small slice of luxury

Shop in style at the Staunton Harold Estate’s Ferrers Centre. Packed full of classy independent retailers, crafters and food and drink. From ceramics and paintings to blacksmithery and jewellery, come and see true artisans at work, then buy their works before refuelling in the Stables coffee shop. You can also try pottery painting with the kids and explore the garden centre. If you want to treat and pamper yourself then you will be spoilt for choice. The award winning The Spa at Breedon Priory is a fantastic location to give yourself a luxury break. With indulgent wellness packages and dining that will make you feel good inside and out, you will leave fully relaxed and revitalised for another day of exploration in the National Forest.
