Learn traditional craft and woodland skills that have been part of the National Forest community for hundreds of years. Greenwood Days offer experience days literally rooted in the Forest. Set in an idyllic 90-acre woodland, their aim is to teach traditional crafts and forestry techniques to visitors while using materials sourced from the Forest and leaving as little impact as possible.
As they have grown they have been able to offer an ever wider range of craft courses, championing the development of skills that are on the red list of UK endangered crafts. This allows people to develop unique skills from the past to be used in the future, all in a woodland setting that directly relates to them. They then also get to create something beautiful to take away and share more widely.
Their commitment to sustainability has been part of their ethos from the very start, growing with and alongside the National Forest. Their woodland teaching centre is built from timbers growing 20 metres from where they teach and all other materials are sourced as locally as possible, using materials from within the Forest and from their links with other local businesses.
Where they need power, Greenwood Days have invested in EV transport and battery storage so off peak (green energy) can be used. Though with their focus on traditional methods, they concentrate on hand tools and natural materials which leave as little impact as possible on the surrounding environment. This also helps to educate their customers in green travel and transport, with many considering switching themselves.
Their customers are incredibly loyal, with around 50% returning regularly. They also run well-attended volunteer days where people come and help in the maintenance of the centre and can feel part of a wider community. Their students are loyal, booking multiple times in the year and returning regularly, some for 25 years!
Through the relationships they have built with The National Forest, suppliers and landowners they have a regular supply of sustainably managed materials. The great professional relationships (and friendships) with partners means creates a community around the area. This helps with promotion and protects the business from supply problems.
“This initiative is a timely, important idea, promoting different models of sustainability, showing other companies how they could make small changes to their business which could reduce their environmental impact and make a real difference. The initiative will help us through promotion and linking with other ‘champions of sustainability’ enabling the sharing of ideas and linking us all makes such a difference to our visibility in the marketplace and encourages this mindset throughout our sector.”
