Support the local community and buy local at Harborough's sustainable shopping centre The Village!
One of the big sustainability success stories in Leicestershire, The Village in Market Harborough is a non-profit Community Interest Company which was set up four years ago. They have a focus on environmental sustainability, and a vision to:
support a caring and thoughtful community that makes a positive impact on people and the planet.
They provide a space in the centre of Market Harborough for environmentally friendly businesses and ethical entrepreneurs to sell their products, and in doing so, The Village has become a key part of the local community.
The Village has a well-used Community Fridge, that since its launch in September 2022 has saved over 5 tonnes of food from landfill and supported approximately 10,000 people to access free food. Their community café offers affordable food and 'pay-it-forward' options, plus their accessible community garden gives people a chance to grow and use the produce there. They also provide a base for the Market Harborough Fixers who are run a weekly not-for-profit repair café, and run a school outreach programme that has reached more than 200 local children.
Collaboration is key to what they do, bringing in outside organisations like the Harborough Woodland Trust and the Jubilee Food Bank to help the local community to live more sustainably, to reach more people and to provide education and resources.
The Village has very straightforward goals… Responsible production and responsible consumption. But in practice what does that mean? They aim to be socially conscious, to offer lifestyle options and initiatives that reduce negative impact on the planet, they aim to be inclusive but also honest and transparent. As they operate for the benefit of the local community and the planet, sometimes they won’t do specific things! But they’ll always try to explain why.
“We’re proud to have built and developed a strong, loyal and caring community through our sustainability focus. This community supported us through COVID and beyond so we actively listen to them and use their feedback to shape our product offering and services. This constantly evolves at the same time as the world’s perceptions on sustainability change and adapt.”
