Cotesbach Educational Trust - Building a Powerful Community

Telling stories that bring the past to life, fantastic hands-on learning activities and nature-based craft activities, why not try something a little different for your next visit? Cotesbach Educational Trust is a historic conservation project, based at the Cotesbach Estate just minutes drive from Lutterworth in Harborough District.

They launched the Charity in 2007, when ‘Act Local, Think Global’ was their mantra, and have built their business with sustainability at the heart of their vision.Their motto is ‘Reconnecting with place and land to develop skills for the future’ and this is all based upon the collective nature of the historic Cotesbach Estate.

Collaboration and co-operation with their neighbours on the Estate is key and is rooted in their history just as the Victorian residents of the area would have done. They strive to be embedded in the community, giving a bridge to education in arts, environment and heritage, with the resources of Cotesbach Estate at their fingertips.

They are surrounded by and draw upon the expertise of businesses and neighbours who all have sustainability at their heart – from regenerative land, cultivating a plentiful supply of their own organic produce from their gardens along with other local producers for the menus at the Yard Café. Operating on this small scale has allowed them to be resilient in recent years, although it does not guarantee long term survival, and they are very aware that the attention that they gain from wider networks and the partnerships they make are essential for a small organisation like Cotesbach.

Creating ecosystems of small businesses and sustaining these links can undoubtedly help sustain organisations like Cotesbach and is key to their offer. This is a place where heritage crafts are alive, where you can learn how to forage for wild foods or enjoy apple tasting days, to bake your own bread, learn traditional arts such as basket weaving and dye making or just marvel at the skills of the local Blacksmith at work.

Sophy Newton, Cotesbach Heritage Manager

“Whether people visit us for a wedding, workshop or just to visit with friends and family – visitors can reconnect and experience a green day here in Cotesbach. It’s wonderful to be part of a network promoting green ways and green days – and join with others striving for a sustainable future.”

Cotesbach Sustainability top tips

  • Keep at it: you may think others have got there first but little by little is OK too and more embedded and lasting in the end
  • Most of all, make sure that you work to connect with people: stories matter!
