Everards Meadows

Everards Meadows - A triumph of green redevelopment

The Everards Meadows site at Fosse Park is a triumph of regenerative development. Not only is it home to some fantastic businesses striving for sustainability, it has created 70 acres of green space for visitors and the local community.

Located opposite the huge Fosse Shopping Park in Leicester and near to a major junction of the M1, you could be forgiven for forgetting that as you stroll through countryside lanes and cycle paths, watch dragonflys flit and fish splash in the canal or hear families playing on the large green spaces as you sip on locally roasted coffee or freshly brewed ale.

Everards Meadows was created as part of the redevelopment of the Everards brewery and not only added 2.4km of paths and cycle paths to the area, but also saw the installation of a £0.5 million bridge over the River Soar which connects the site to the National Cycle Network. On any given sunny day the green spaces can be found packed with families enjoying a picnic, a coffee or heading out for a bike ride.

In looking for like-minded green businesses to join them on the Everards Meadows site, the company encouraged both local and national institutions to join them. The development saw the building of a 10,000 square foot Specialized Cycling store and the 3,250 square foot Jenno’s Coffee House.

Jenno’s now has five locations across the city and county and they are committed to making a difference to the environment. The building itself is sustainably made, uses an air source heat pump and has all energy efficient equipment. All of their disposable cups are either recycled or composted and they use paper straws for all their drinks. Thanks to their new site at Carlton Park, just 2 miles away, they now make their own baked goods, cakes and treat, meaning that all their produce is locally produced, reducing food miles.

Also on the site is national cycle retail chain Specialized, who offer bike sales and rentals for visitors to the area. Alongside their promotion of a cycle-led lifestyle for all who shop with them, the Leicester store has a number of green initiatives. ALL of their staff get a free bike to ride for a year and are encouraged to cycle commute to work. Their daily, weekly and monthly hire bikes are ideal for both visitors and commuters. All of their used tyres and inner tubes are recycled alongside any packing materials that bikes are delivered in.

They also work alongside local communities to allow groups to borrow bikes for events which encourages them to see the benefits of riding. Being alongside National Cycle Route 6 offers fantastic opportunities to show the Green Ways of travelling and the team regularly take part in group litter picking and rubbish removal, also supporting local mountain biking trail routes to ensure they are maintained and rideable.
