Marking 100 years after being declared open as a museum!

This tour will look at the guildhall and its purpose throughout the ages.

IMPORTANT When looking at the 'Book Now' calendar, you must select 4th March for this special tour - the other dates are the regular Guildhall Tours.

We will look at the life of the Guildhall how it all began and what happened to it over the years, and its life today.

Building began in 1343 and the great hall is reputed to have been completed in 1390. Further wings were added over the next 100 years.

However, in 1876 the corporation met at the Guildhall for the last time, a new Town Hall had been built! The Guildhall was in a state of disrepair. The Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society petitioned the council to save the building and in 1922 a restoration programme began.

On 19th May 1926 – after the restoration the Guildhall was declared open as a museum. The council committee agreed that the museum and library committee should take over the future control of the building.

The most significant building in Leicester is delighted to be celebrating 100 years open as a museum! This is your opportunity to come and find out more regarding this unique and beautiful building with a free guided tour.
