New Directors’ Showcase
A new cohort of first-time LDS directors stage a collection of one-act plays, beginning their journeys towards directing on the mainstage. The plays are:
Aria Da Capo by Edna St. Vincent Millay
Directed by Maria-Irina Popescu
Pierrot’s grown tired of Columbine but tries to humour her anyway. When Cothurnus – the Masque of Tragedy – enters, Pierrot and Columbine are forced to obey his wishes and clear the stage. Two naïve shepherds replace them: Thyrsis and Corydon. As they play out their scene, harmony and humanity deteriorate into fighting over resources.
A Little Box of Oblivion by Stephen Bean
Directed by Ketan Deogan
A woman leaves a box with a stranger in a park, giving strict instructions not to move, knock, or open it. Passers-by offer suggestions as to what’s inside – is it a bomb, a packet of deadly anthrax or perhaps a severed head? Exasperated, the stranger shakes the box – only to be berated by the returning woman, who reveals all…
The News Where You Are by Matt Middleton
Directed by Gary Place
Ryan is a disillusioned 25-year-old. Claire, a saleswoman selling subscriptions to a pointless TV news channel, knocks on his door. Claire, also in her mid-twenties, still has optimism for the future – however misguided this may be. Can she entice Ryan into a subscription with a free pair of remote-control slippers?
