Music Concert: Leics Celebrate! Alumni Reception
A celebration of generations of Leicestershire Musicians.
Hundreds of young people will be performing at a special concert to celebrate the life-changing legacy of music education.
The event presented by Leicestershire Music will take place in its new home - the Haymarket Theatre in Leicester city centre - on Saturday 21 March as it seeks to secure opportunities for future generations.
Since its establishment in 1948, Leicestershire Music has trained more than 250,000 young musicians, many of whom have achieved national and international fame.
Alumni have gone on to wonderful careers as composers, orchestra members, West End musical directors and conductors including performing with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Contemporary artists connected to the service include Hard Life and Mahalia and saxophonist Marcus Joseph whose music seamlessly blends jazz, reggae, and hip-hop
The concert will feature bands, orchestras and choirs starting with performances from younger members followed by an evening concert of senior groups including acapella choirs and steel pans. Last year, the service worked directly with 18,000 children and young people through schools, performance opportunities and music groups, including partnership working with organisations such as the Philharmonica and National Youth Jazz Orchestra.
Young composer Sam Nutter (16) - who is composing a piece for the forthcoming Young Person’s Music Industry Careers Conference - will be talking about his journey with Leicestershire Music.
Keynote speaker will be Jonathan Vaughan, Principal of the world-renowned Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, who has credited the Leicestershire music service for his entire career, having performed in its orchestras from age nine.
