Leicester Caribbean Carnival
Back in 1984, while the world marked 150 years since the Emancipation of Slavery in the Caribbean, here in Leicester… nothing happened. No celebration. No reflection. It was a silence that didn’t sit right with many in our Caribbean community.
Determined to change that, a group of passionate community members came together with a bold idea, to bring the spirit, colour, and culture of the Caribbean to the heart of Leicester through a carnival. After much discussion, it was decided: Leicester would host its first Caribbean Carnival on the first Saturday of August 1985 and every year after that.
