Janacek: Mass in E Flat
Kodaly: Missa Brevis
This programme brings together two radiant pillars of Central European choral music: Leo Janeks Mass in E-flat and Zoltn Kodlys Missa Brevis . Though shaped by distinct personal voices, both works belong to the missa brevis traditiona concise but profoundly expressive form that allows composers to distil the Mass text into concentrated musical insight.
Janek and Kodly were near contemporaries, born only a decade apart, and both were deeply rooted in the musical soil of their homelands. Each drew inspiration from the speech rhythms, folk inflections, and modal colours of Moravian and Hungarian traditions, forging a musical language that feels at once ancient and boldly modern. Their choral writing brims with rhythmic vitality, luminous harmonies, and a striking sense of spiritual immediacy.
The pairing of these two works invites us into a shared cultural landscapeone in which sacred ritual, national identity, and a deep love of vernacular song intertwine. At the same time, we encounter two distinctive artistic personalities: Janeks fervent, raw-edged intensity set alongside Kodlys lyrical warmth and refined craftsmanship.
We think you will be moved by the energy, poignancy, and sheer beauty of this music. Whether you are discovering these pieces for the first time or returning to them, this programme will offer you time for reflection, exhilaration, and excitement.
