
Discover Indonesian Tamarind Batik: A Talk and Demonstration
Join visiting artists and scholars from Indonesia for an inspiring talk on Tamarind Batik, a unique and environmentally friendly textile resist technique that uses tamarind seed powder to create vibrant decorative patterns on cloth.
This engaging session will include:
- The rich history of Indonesian batik, an ancient resist-dyeing tradition known for its intricate designs and global influence.
- Contemporary innovations using natural pastes and dyes derived from tamarind seeds to produce sustainable textiles.
- Live demonstrations of Sinjang, the traditional Indonesian cloth-wrapping technique.
- A close-up look at these beautifully crafted textiles.
This event is free and open to all.
A hands-on workshop for Loughborough University students will take place later in the day from 2-5pm. Places for the workshop must be booked separately.
An exhibition of Tamarind Batik pieces will be on display on the ground floor of Loughborough Design School from 10am to 5pm on the day.
