Buxtehude & Poulenc

1st November
Clarendon Park Congregational Church, Springfield Road, Leicester, LE2 3BE

Kingfisher Chorale are delighted to be joined by the superb authentic instrumental ensemble, The Musical & Amicable Society for a wonderful concert of beautiful choral music by Buxtehude & Poulenc.

The seven Buxtehude cantatas date from c.1680 and are sung devotionals that tell the story of the suffering of Jesus' body. The title itself translates from the Latin as the limbs most holy of our suffering Jesus.

This programme brings together two profound works of sacred music that, though separated by centuries, share an intensity of expression and a deep engagement with themes of suffering, devotion, and penitence.
Dietrich Buxtehudes Membra Jesu nostri (1680) is a cycle of seven cantatas meditating on different parts of Christs crucified body. Written for choir, soloists and instruments, it is both intimate and dramatic, combining Lutheran devotion with the sensuous beauty of early Baroque musical language from Italy.

Nearly three centuries later, Francis Poulenc turned to his own Catholic faith in the Quatre motets pour un temps de pnitence (193839). These a cappella motets, written in the shadow of approaching war, blend stark dissonance with radiant clarity, reflecting Poulencs gift for combining modern harmonic language with textures and structures of the Baroque creating works of profound spiritual expression.

Heard together, these works invite us into a journey of contemplation that bridges Baroque devotion and twentieth-century faith, offering music of both searing honesty and luminous colour.
