Attention, Les Apaches!

The revolutionary artists movement Les Apaches (The Hooligans) was formed by Maurice Ravel and pianist Ricardo Vies in 1903 - the same year the 28 year old composer completed his epic string quartet. Amused when an intended insult Watch out, Hooligans! was shouted at the rowdy group of friends in the street as they left the premiere of Debussys new opera, they appropriated the epithet for themselves. This groundbreaking collective of artists, musicians and writers met weekly in a studio in Montmartre, Paris, to share ideas and perform new works. Centred around Ravels mesmerising String Quartet this concert explores the richly evocative underworld of Les Apaches, inhabited by Ravels closest artist friends Manuel De Falla, Stravinsky, Satie and Debussy, as well as his teacher Gabriel Faur, to whom Ravel dedicated his quartet.
