Leicester is blessed with a great variety of cinemas, both mainstream and arthouse, plus fantastic organisations putting on special events and showings. Whether you’re looking for the latest blockbuster, a film festival, foreign language showings or themed evenings, we have got you covered.
Here’s what’s taking place over the next few months!
Phoenix Leicester
Obviously the Phoenix is Leicester’s top independent cinema showing a range of the latest blockbusters, arthouse and classic movies, plus independent and foreign films from across the world. We can’t give a full listing, head to their website for that, but here are just a few of the highlights.
Robert Redford Selectrospective. Running through January and February, this tribute to one of the great Hollywood stars includes such classics as Ordinary People, All The President’s Men and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Knowing Me, Knowing You – The True Self in Japanese Cinema. The Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme returns as part of a UK-wide festival, bringing a collection of films that centred on the theme of the true self and the quest to understand it. Films include Nemurubaka: Hypnic Jerks, Conflagration, Strangers in Kyoto and Ghost Killer.
There will also be screenings of a special 4k restoration of Sunset Boulevard, Park Chan Wook’s No Other Choice, a Holocaust Memorial Day showing of i was 8814, and a rare screening of seminal Danish cycling documentary A Sunday in Hell with an intro by The Guardian’s William Fotheringham.
But there are films every day of the week plus events, art exhibitions, live music and comedy, not to mention the special Lazy Sunday screenings where you can get a breakfast from the in-house restaurant before the 12.30 screening for just £14.95!
Odeon Luxe Freemans Common
Located just a stone’s throw from the city centre and with a full range of mod cons including fully reclining armchair style seating, three times the usual legroom and 4k iSense screens with Dolby Atmos sound. Take a look at their event cinema listings here.

Vue Leicester
