The Jewry Wall Real Roman Experience opens on 26 July and offers a taste of Leicester (or should we say Ratae Corieltavorum) nearly 2,000 years ago! This brand new visitor attraction is the most exciting addition to the city since Phillipa Langley thought it would be a good idea to dig up a car park.

And speaking of that car park, it’s the most famous lost and found story ever told and the King Richard III Visitor Centre is the perfect way to spend a morning (or afternoon). Combine it with a visit to Leicester Cathedral (completely free of charge, donations are encouraged though) and see Richard III’s last resting place).

Tread the fields where Richard III lost his crown, and discover the story behind the battle that changed the course of English history at Bosworth Battlefield Vistor Centre.

From Earth to the University, discover the solar system and venture into deep space at the UK’s only dedicated space-related visitor attraction, the National Space Centre.

An authentic taste of the middle ages as you enter a hose with ties to the Gunpowder Plot. The 1620s House in Donington le Heath has great events running all year long, and is a fascinating glimpse into history.

The Triumph Factory Visitor Experience in Hinckley has a free museum with some of the most famous motorbikes in cinema history. From the Great Escape to James Bond and Mission Impossible to Jurassic Park, this is a treat for petrolheads and movie lovers.
Free entry to the museum and café. Guided tours of the museum £5 for July and August (one under 16 free per paying adult. Factory tours from £30 per person.

Experience The Crown’s Windsor Castle stand-in at Belvoir Castle, not to mention the place where Afternoon Tea was invented. It’s a right royal day out! All summer long there’s a special deal for you to explore the Gardens, their Belvoir on Sea event with sandy surprises and classic end-of-the-pier amusements, the Belvoir playground and animal park.

Take a ride on the Great Central Railway this summer. Their brand new Explorer ticket offers great value and unlimited hop-on, hop-off travel between stations, working out at around £15 per person (a 2 adult, 2 children ticket is £60)

Wistow Maze is one of the top summer attractions around Leicestershire, this 8 acre corn and sunflower maze features 3 miles of paths to get lost in, plus a great trail for the kids to follow. This year’s theme is a steam train to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Great British Railway.

Get up close and personal with parrots, budgies, parakeets, Meerkats and many more species of bird at Desford’s Tropical Birdland. Buy a bag of seed (or peanuts) at the start and you can hand-feed these amazing avian beauties.

Free museums
One of the best things about summer is exploring our local heritage and Leicestershire is no exception. There are a number of free museums around the county for you to explore.
In Leicester take a look round Leicester Museum and Art Gallery’s dinosaurs, mummies, plus a fantastic Elmer the Elephant exhibit. Newarke Houses Museum tells the social history of the city and is open Saturdays and Wednesdays through the holiday. Abbey Pumping Station, known locally as the ‘poo museum’ as it tells the story of our sewers, plumbing, health ad hygiene, is open on Mondays throughout the holidays.
Explore the beautiful Symington Building which houses the Harborough Museum. Immerse yourself in the local industrial history and marvel at the Hallaton Treasure, one of the most important iron age finds in Britain. This summer their special event focuses on the Wonders of Nature.
Loughborough’s Charnwood Museum showcases the rich heritage of the local area. Featuring exhibits which reflect the history, geology, archaeology and industries of Charnwood and the surrounding area. Open Wednesday through to Sunday.
Melton Carnegie Museum traces the social and economic history of Melton and includes exhibitions on the town’s world-renowned Stilton cheese and pork pie industries. It also tells the often controversial history of fox hunting, and how that inspired the phrase ‘Painting the town red’. Open Tuesday to Saturday.
Lutterworth and District Museum is a fascinating glimpse into the history of the area. It’s home to the Sir Frank Whittle Jet Engine and tells how Lutterworth launch the race to the skies at the end of WWII. It’s also the place where John Wycliffe completed the first translation of the Bible from Latin to English.Open Thursday to Sunday.
